Celtics are about tradition and old school. Hence why Red didn't want cheerleaders. Los Celtics is a bad idea for the Celtics franchise.
Why?
I always thought the history of racism in Boston puts a damper on any type of culturally related marketing the NBA might try to pursue in that market. Disclaimer: I'm not saying Boston is still a racist city, I attended Northeastern (Go Huskies!) and it's genuinely one of my favorite places. But there's definitely a negative connotation in regards to race that people from other places seem to have. My grandmother tried to talk me out of moving to Boston for school and I recall a few years ago I went on a job interview, when the interviewer (who was African American like myself) and I were making small talk about how much I enjoyed my time in Boston he seemed very surprised that I had such a great experience in a city that's "less accepting".
The fact that people actually have a problem with Los Celtics proves Boston is still less accepting. I'm glad the Olympics aren't coming here particularly because there would be people here that would not be accepting to so many different cultures visiting.
lol wut?
Very insightful post, great quality.
I think you are being rediculous. I think people are more against the parquet pride jerseys than Los Celtics but the point is the same.
The uniform should say BOSTON or CELTICS nothing else. The whole "los" campaign I find a bit stupid, but I dont think being against it makes me racisst or anything else.
It's a promotion the NBA runs every year, get over it. At least people aren't as outraged on here as last year. A truly embarrassing moment for this forum.
I think you are misreading why people dont like it.
I dont think anyone was mad because they put spanish on the uniform. MOre that it was just a dumb campaign and it seemed unnecessary.
I went to a game this year and we wore parquet pride uniforms and I was pretty irrationally mad because I wanted to see our crisp famous iconinc home uniforms.
Anyone whos mad cus they feel it is the NBA forcing spanish on them or some BS is pathetic but i think that calling this an embarassing moment for the blog is an overreaction. Ive only seen a few people too against it.
If I go to a game Id rather just see Celtics, but if they wanna wear los Celtics a few nights a year then im not mad about it or anything Id just rather see the normal uniforms.
I have absolutely no problem with warmups and all that stuff having los plastered all over it or if they have a presentation at half time about the importance of latino heritage.
Id just like to keep the uniforms the same. When you go to a Yanks game you expect to get those iconic pinstripes. If they showed up in alternate unis Id be disappointed. Especially if I thought the alternate looked dumb. Its that type of thing.
