Barnes in the offseason?

What do you all think?
pros/cons?

 Similar system, plays small ball, great wing defender, accurate shooter 48% FG, 40% Threes, 80% FT,

Has the ability to be a more prominent player (4th option on arguably the best team of all time).

Will command more than 20 mil in the inflated market. Celtics have plenty of money to spend.

While he doesnt quite fill a need (Crowder) he would be able to fill a dangerous small ball lineup playing the 4 with Crowder at the 3..

Most likely would have to let Turner walk..

Dont have to necessarily trade the BK pick (unless its for a rim protector imo)

The Celtics have never been a FA destination spot so bigger names are usually out. Stevens presence helps so a great "team" player like Barnes seems like a fit..

Man, this one's a tough call and I have a feeling that we're going to be talking about it a lot through the summer. A year ago, I would have said absolutely. But with the way Crowder has been playing, we'd have two starting caliber players. Crowder would end up being relegated to the bench, unless there is an opportunity to play him at the 4 (and keeping Turner), moving us from "small-ball" to "really-small ball."*

I'm hard-pressed to give him the max on this one, since our biggest needs are at 4 and 5, and I'm not sure Crowder fills out the 4.

If you believe the Okafor rumor then, the Celtics going after Barnes makes sense. Signing Barnes would mean the C's want to stay young so they can sustain success once they reach it.

I think the C's need to upgrade their 4 and 5 spots in the offseason. Barnes kind of accomplishes that because he and Crowder could start at the 3 and the 4. If we can get Simmons or Ingram I don't think there is a need for Barnes.

I'd much rather pursue Horford though, since he's unrestricted and Zach Lowe said that Horford is on Durant's short list of guys he would play with.

There is nothing wrong with Crowder coming off the bench... For one it would not bother him and second it really bolsters that unit and makes it easier to let Turner walk (he wants to get paid as well)...

If the Celtics get Simmons or Ingram then yes it makes less sense ... even less with Ingram but Simmons can play the 4...

We would be offering him max money to come off the bench.

Gotta wonder if he would even be interested in our situation. If he's going to leave Golden State, he's probably going to want an increased role.

I used to want Barnes, but with Crowder's emergence and Turner's ability to fit in anywhere (and likely make a LOT less than Barnes), I would be happier spending the money elsewhere or using AB and/or Johnson and picks to upgrade those positions through trade.

Barnes is a nice player, but he would have to play the 4 and I am not sure that is his best position.

Problems: Durant or Lebron are not coming here sorry...either is Drummond

Also, if we draft Brown, no way we sign Barnes. If we do, Brown will never play or a trade has to happen to clear up minutes.

Going to have to see who we get in the draft first.

I would go Barnes in FA if team ends up with Bender or Lab via draft. Turner is likely gone and JJ is in last year. Team needs another wing that can also defend like Crowder.

He's 6'8 and 225lbs, stick him at the 4 next to Crowder. A 23 year old kid who shoots like that fits perfectly with our youth movement. He has championship experience, plays hard, and is 4th fiddle on the best team in the league. He'd come here and look like an All-Star. Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it! I don't want to see James Harden happen all over again and not to the Celtics!  ::)

If Danny Ainge knows KD is not coming here, he should be pouncing at Barnes hoping the Warriors go for KD and don't match any contracts.

I don't want to spend that type of money on a player who would be a small PF. 


I don't think he is enough of an upgrade over Crowder to warrant that type of deal.






But if somehow the Celtics ended up trading Crowder in a package to get a Blake, Love of Cousins, then yes, sign him to be the starting SF.

Barnes makes a ton of sense for us if your looking at a Crowder + Brooklyn pick type deal. Crowder + Barnes probably still makes sense with Smart's defensive versatility covering up for the lack of size.

I'd definitely still want to get an athletic 5 that could play with IT/Smart/Crowder/Barnes along the lines of a Horford or a Draymond Green type but given how deadly Warriors small ball lineup has been ours could be the type that can blow teams off the court on any given night.

Don't want to downplay the risk factor given that if Barnes doesn't up his production he could turn into one of the worst contracts in the league, but IMO the Warriors seasoning has helped fix whatever confidence he lost under performing in college. Caught him play a few times this year and he looked assertive and was confidently knocking down contested shots.
