Pistons 2004
Aberation not the rule,
Aberrations
do happen, though. If you can't quite
yet become the rule, there's nothing wrong with striving to be the aberration in the meantime.
The thing to remember about 2004, besides the possible semi-resemblance to our Celtics, is how totally
certain almost every rational voice in the basketball world was that those Lakers were an unbeatable juggernaut. But no team is unbeatable. We've just demonstrated the ability to beat the Cavs. We've played the Warriors to the edge of victory twice in the last calendar year. No, we're not quite a well-oiled machine. But I'm not sure this team's cohesion is far off from the Spurs. Should we stand pat and not take any risks? Of
course not, not if the right opportunity for an upgrade presents itself. And there's still plenty to upgrade. But hey, guess what, even if we only had a 5% chance of upsetting the Cavs and Spurs/Warriors, things that only have a 5% chance of happening
do still happen sometimes...about 5 out of 100 times, lol. Longshots sometimes win. We at least have a horse in the race, and there are only about six or seven other horses. We have momentum, grit, balls, cohesion, depth, health (knock on wood), good offense, great defense, excellent guidance, underrated talent, and -- based on Jae's words -- confidence. Why not us? Well, there are probably 10-15 great reasons why
not, lol. But don't fall into the trap of confusing expected outcomes with what actually unfolds in the real world. Anything is possible, in the stirring KG sense. In the literal Dumb & Dumber "So you're saying..." sense, too, sure, i.e., no one wants to be a fool seduced by the extremely improbable. But be careful not to overlook that anything might be
plausible for this team, too. Part of the joy of being a fan is getting to be a little irrationally exuberant. Don't let that part be strangled by the weight of Prevailing Wisdom and Spreadsheet Logic.
