In a move against George Karl, Kings fire assistant Vance Walberg
Chris Mannix of The Vertical

In another showdown between Kings management and head coach George Karl, Sacramento fired assistant coach Vance Walberg.

Walberg, 59, is a close confidant of Karl’s who is responsible for a number of Karl’s offensive tenets.

Karl was vehemently against the decision to dismiss Walberg, league sources told The Vertical.

Sacramento, losers of eight of its last 10 games and with a leaky defense that has surrendered 110 or more points in each of its last four contests, plans to seek a veteran, defensive-minded assistant for Karl’s staff.

“This was a tough decision made after consideration of what is best for the team moving forward,” Kings general manager Vlade Divac said in a statement. “We want to thank Vance for his contributions to the organization and wish him the very best in his future endeavors.”

Steve Kyler thinks they want Karl to quit so they don't have to pay him. Fat chance.

well the kings haven't played much defense all year, but it has to really irk Karl to have his assistants fired by a pretty marginal Sac front office.  Sounds like it is getting a bit toxic over there.

Don't like front office interfering with assistant coaches. The coaching staff should be the Head Coach's domain. Trust (or lack of it) is too big a factor to force assistants onto a coaching staff that the Head Coach does not want.

Agree.  In fact, I can't ever recall hearing about an assistant getting fired, but not the head coach. Weird.

Suns did it to Hornacek's top assistant in December before they axed him.  Bulls did it to Ron Adams a couple years ago which is how we had him for a season.  Not the usual course of business, but it happens.

I have no rooting interest for or against the Kings, but I find the way that team is run totally entertaining and comical.  Two summers ago, they released a couple of videos discussing who they were going to draft.  One video was days or weeks before the draft and the other on draft night.  In the videos, Vivek was calling the shots, Mike Malone was sitting there not saying a word and no one was asking his opionion, D'Alessandro was not in charge, and Mitch Richmond and Chris Mullin as part of the team's "brain trust" were kissing Vivek's rear end and he loved it.  Vivek apparently released the videos to show what a great job he was doing.  It was crazy.

This team continues to be dysfunctional and it's all because of the owner.  You need to allow your GM and coach to do their jobs.  The coach needs to pick his staff and run things his way and the GM can't have former NBA all stars as part of the team's brain trust undermining him.  And just because you once coached a 12 year old girls team, doesn't mean you know more than NBA coaches and GM's.  Vivek hasn't figured these things out and is continuously messing things up for his team.  It's amusing to watch from afar.  I'm just glad I'm not a King's fan.

What's worse? Firing the offensive coach who wasn't working for Boogie?

The notion of the Nets management of being incompetent is disproportional. Ever since Prokarov bought the team, they made the playoffs every single year, as well as didn't spare any costs building world class facilities. The only negative to the management was a short sighted gamble, that even seemed good at the time. Prokarov even showed several years of patience to give his Coach and GM a chance; and guess what, they flipped KG for Young. Yes, they are in a hole right now, but I wouldn't be surprised if they are only in it for a year or two.

I don't know what's going to happen with the Nets but insta-rebuilds like Boston are pretty rare.  Most teams spend a year or two bottoming out and then another 2 or 3 getting back to respectability, and that's after getting a franchise cornerstone in the lottery.  The only first round pick the Nets have for the next three years is in 2017, and we can swap picks with them that year.

They are in one of the deepest, darkest holes in NBA history.

The Nets may be in a deeper hole right now, but Sacramento is probably run worse.  Like Denis said, most of the Nets problems come from one huge gamble that backfired.  We have to see what they do from here on out, although the fact that they wanted to hire Sean Marks as their GM a couple days ago makes me wonder.  I have no idea of his qualifications, but it was certainly a surprising name to hear.
