I find guys like Draymond Green and Jimmy Butler very funny and completely like-able.  They're like Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, or heck even Shaq/Kenny to me.  They give Popovich-level interviews.  Curry, Leonard, and George seem like awesome guys too.

Very refreshing compared to puke-worthy guys like LeBron, Kobe, Reggie Miller, original Isiah Thomas, rest of the bad boys, etc.

As far as new villains, I'm keeping my eyes on that egotistical Raptors PG who leads the league in flops (Lowry).
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

Karl Towns seems very likable and he seems like someone who can rule the NBA in a few years.   His rookie numbers are very impressive.   His skillset is pretty uncanny.  I'm not even talking about him winning the skills competition, but that actually kind of showed it a little.   If I was starting a team from scratch, he might be my #1 pick right now.

Curry had been my favorite non-Celtic in the league since right around his rookie season.   I was super high on Curry.   Everyone obviously loves him now.   Of the up and coming talent, Towns is definitely my favorite non-Celtic right now.

LarBrd, I think you and I are driving the Towns bandwagon.
Isaiah, you were lightning in a bottle.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
Sounds more like a product of being Millenials while the others you mentioned were from Gen X (like me). Millenials tend to be a bit softer / more optimistic which leads to a more likable personality.

Young guys are always likable. Just wait. You'll turn on some of them.

Well, technically Lebron is a millennial.  I think anyone born before 1982 is considered Gen X.

But yeah, millennials tend to be a more prone to group think, prefer the 'easier' way out (thus why you see superstars teaming up more now) and less individualistic.

I disagree with both of you.

Kevin Garnett was the furthest thing from soft, but he was optimistic (anything's possible) and I loved him.  He was a funny/silly guy and he always made me laugh in interviews.  He TRIED to make me laugh in interviews.

Other guys like Kobe/LeBron don't go into interviews with the mindset of entertaining the fans, (which is why they show interviews) they act serious, and just give responses that try to make themselves look good because they think they're better than everyone else.

Shaq is the same as KG.  Funny guy, always trying to make the fans laugh and entertain them in interviews.  He's continuing to do that in broadcasting, where he's always trying to put on a good show for the viewers, even at his own expense.  He's cocky as hell, and "took the easy way out" by bailing on ORL after 4 years and going to team up with Kobe on a superpower, but he's a guy with a great personality, whom I love (even though he's a Laker who gave them 3 rings).

Then you've got Kobe, who grew up in same world/generation as KG and Shaq, and here's a guy who breaks up a family/marriage by letting the whole world know someone is cheating on their wife.  Meanwhile, he's also cheating on his wife.  And committing rape.  Kidd, same generation, he's not like-able at all in interviews and he hit his wife.  It has nothing to do with generation.

I find tons of the Gen X and earlier guys likeable, NBA or elsewhere.  I find plenty of Millennials and "young guys" like Lowry or Jahlil Okafor unlikable.

All in all, I'd say NBA players are on average, the same as normal people.  Some people are like-able or "charismatic" if that's what you want to call it and others aren't.  Butler and Green have unreal amounts of charisma, and it will become more and more known the more they get in front of cameras.  They're capable being politicians or broadcasters/analysts after their careers.

Between Davis, Cousins, and Towns,  you've got three fairly young and physically dominant big men coming up.  In a bygone era, they might've been the top guys in the league already.  Add Blake Griffin to that group, too.

I think in the league today, though, it's hard for players who don't operate with the ball in their hands a lot of the time to truly dominate.  Everything is driven by the ball-handler.  Having an elite big man can make a huge difference, but only if you have a really good ball-handler running the show.

I picked up Towns in a CB dynasty league, so you guys can drive but I'll beep the horn  ;D

He seems very likable too.  Plays hard and always wants to improve - he had like a 32 pt, 15 reb game and afterward said he'd played terribly because he screwed up some defensive possessions.

To be fair, I think you'd be hard pressed to find someone NOT on the Towns bandwagon.

It's like being on the steph Curry bandwagon

At an NCAA tournament game in 2008.  True story.  I was there to watch UNC but got the bonus of seeing Curry's first two games in their run.

Dude had already dropped 40 on Gonzaga but had a pretty bad first ~25 min against 2 seed Georgetown, Davidson got down by 15 or so.  Guys behind me (who were not Georgetown fans, just tools) were heckling him - "Curry sucks!  He's a bum!!"  They shut up when he got hot and Davidson came back.  Now my wife and I like to yell "he's a bum!" when he misses shots.   ;D

I think Towns skillset makes him potentially stand out from the rest.  He's the prototypical big man for this generation.  People are underrating how impactful a Tim Duncan with range (38% from three so far this season) can be.
