  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
Replay isn't up online yet, here's a summary from 'Smatwent Crazy' on RealGM.

Chris Mannix was on Toucher&Rich this morning, dropped some interesting tidbits:

-Kevin McHale loved coaching Dwight, his opinion really resonated with Ainge
-Houston wants a "2008 Dwight Howard" return in a trade, including multiple picks and players
-The price is way too high for Ainge, and he's not interested
-Ainge is looking to build a team that free agents will want to play for
-Dwight is very unpopular in the league, players don't like him and don't want to play with him
-Morey is trying to put out feelers to gauge Howard's value
-Players like Isaiah, Smart and Crowder, would like to play with them
-He said Crowder is probably our most important player
-Ainge is very interested in Gallo, but nothing he's offered really interests Denver
-Denver is looking to build around Gallo, wants a large haul for him
-Denver will not get a Brooklyn pick, he's not a franchise level guy and you can't pass up the chance to get one for a sub-all star level guy
-Atlanta won't deal Horford unless they receive a big return
-Atlanta wants to deal Teague, as they feel he has significant value with his contract. They feel they can get a sizable return
-Unless Brooklyn signs Thibs to coach the team, they are going to seriously suck in the immediate future
-Boston won't part with Brooklyn picks unless it's for a franchise level guy, as these will all be high picks and really allow the team to build a serious contender over the next 3-5 years
-Boston will be opportunistic. If the right opportunity doesn't come up, they won't make a move
-Mannix views Simmons/Ingram/Dunn as franchise level talents

Throws a wet blanket on most of the recent trade talks we've been foaming about.
It's only the early stages before trade deadline but worth a listen when it's up on their site.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

I think its best to be patient at this point, with the top of the west running wild for the next few years, its best to take the slow approach and try to get a franchise type of guy, and not some aged rental.

  • That's turrible
I'm good with being patient for a couple more seasons. LeBron's not going anywhere. As long he's East, no one else is a top dog. Slowly building a team of youngins from the draft is the way to go.

One day Rockets GM will be glade to get anything for Howard .   The future is more injuries and decline .  His game was never based on skilled scoring.   Howard has to play at a high physical level ........remember Superman ?

An't happening.   He is super alright.....super bad back , super bad contract

I agree with this logic. The Cs are set up to compete in the playoffs while still building and developing with youth thanks to the Nets.

Reassuring that they won't stupidly spend these on second tier or also rans.

  • TRANSFORMATION INTO CHAMPION COMPLETE!!!
This is hilarious.

Rockets want a large offer for a deeply flawed, aged player with rapidly declining athleticism (which his entire game is based around) who is going to opt out of his contract at the end of the year.

Denver wants a large return for an above average player, who has never even been close to being an All Star, missed many games with injury and they've never been able to build around, all while their team has remained terrible with little signs of improving.

Atlanta wants a large return for Horford, who is good but not great by any means, getting older and a free agent at the end of the season.

All these teams want superstar deals for guys that are not real difference makers. These are guys that make Boston better, but by no means contenders, they should know that the Brooklyn picks are off the table for this level of traded player.

These opposing GMs have to try and get the picks obviously, that's their job, but it's humorous that the approach seems to be that everyone knows the Celtics have these extremely valuable picks, so they'd have to be part of a trade. Curry, Durant, Lebron, Davis, Westbrook, Cousins, Kawhi, George, the absolute A+ players of the NBA are really the only guys worthy of the Nets picks, since none of them are available, the picks are off the table. Period.

Of course the rival GMs are just posturing right now, as we get closer to the deadline, acceptance will set in and hopefully they'll be willing to trade realistically. If not, don't expect much at the deadline.

  • Peace it's a board. We all will never agree.

You make trades like GSW once you have three young cores. Our third will come in this draft. Howard can opt out after this year. I say pass. We have cap space for anyone who is or will be a FA. But It is good that Danny is a pot stirrer.

TL;DR every team who leaked a rumor privately about wanting to trade a player now proclaims publicly that said player is the cornerstone of their franchise who they wouldn't dream of parting with unless offered all-stars and lottery balls.

We will have about two more weeks of this.

For the record, David Lee is the heart and soul of this team. I wouldn't trade him unless I was getting back a couple of unprotected picks and a young player that is universally considered to be a rising star. To be honest, I don't see why anyone thinks he's even available.

We love David Lee here in Boston, he's the kind of player you build around. There's a reason why everyone wants him and we have no intention of trading him.

All jokes aside hope Lee finds a good spot where he can get some minutes. Hate to say it but his best bet might be to go to the land of limitless opportunity Brooklyn New York. That'd be worst case scenario if Lee lead them to the 4th of 5th worst record. Danny Should put a clause in the buyout barring Lee from signing in Brooklyn.

Huh? David Lee is the heart and soul of this team? Two unprotected picks and a rising star? You don't know why he's available? Am I missing the sarcasm?

He's really well respected, great team mate. Guys like playing with him. But he's not the heart and soul. The Heart and soul of this team is Crowder, Smart, Bradley and Thomas.

What I find most interesting about this (based on the summary above, nice work btw) is that players around the league, don't want to play with Dwight Howard, but they do want to play with Isaiah, Marcus Smart, and Crowder.

The whole goal right now needs to be on pumping up the appeal of joining the Celtics on the part of big-time players. This is more than just about free agents, it's also about guys who may or may not push for trades to preferred teams in the future (a big factor in obtaining Garnett in 2007).

The only way acquiring Howard makes sense is if you feel like you might be able to beat Cleveland and get to the Finals with him this year, while just resigning yourself to him leaving after the season. That would do a lot to pump up the profile of the franchise, but it's a risk. Only makes sense if you're sending out something small, like either the Celtics' pick or the Mavs' pick.

Read it in the context of the first paragraph - sofu's talking up how essential Lee is to mock other teams doing the same with guys they're clearly at least willing to discuss trading.  Though the ideal is of course to have him retire a Celtic, Lee could probably be had for as little as a top-10 pick and a starting-caliber wing.

Last time I checked, that ring on David Lee's finger said 2015 NBA Champion.

You can't just go out and trade for NBA champions, my friend.

There are other guys who put up more stats and look better on camera, but David Lee is a winner. He's not sexy, he's not cool, he just takes care of his business like a true professional and he plays the game the right way. He won't be your best player; he won't be shilled by the sneaker pimps that cut the top 10 highlights for sportscenter. No, David Lee will just put on his hard hat and show you that he understands what it takes to win the big games.

Before David Lee came along, this team laid down and got swept by a shorthanded Cleveland Cavaliers. Sure, that group had some nice moments, but when the lights got bright they flinched because they didn't have a guy like David Lee who had been there before. A true pro. A guy with grit who knows how to step up when the going gets tough.

Danny Ainge knows that. He knows what he has in David Lee. He's not going to spin that off for some two-bit show-off who's never won the big game and who's too busy posing for body spray commercials or checking his instagram to focus on playing winning basketball.

It's called "posturing", folks. Nothing more.
Jaylen Brown will be an All Star in the next 5 years.
