No way. JJ is a horrible fit in our offense. Do we really want one of the most iso-loving players in the league?

In the playoffs when you see a team 4-7 times in a row and they get used to your sets enough to big your motion-offense down, absolutely I want someone who's comfortable playing ISO basketball.  It's going to happen whether we like it or not at times -- I'd rather have someone who can do that if needed.

I mean, I'd hope we made other moves, but buying out Lee and replacing him with JJ is still an upgrade.

Maybe but he's not going to play heavy minutes here. Our biggest asset is our defense and all the TO's we generate. JJ is a pretty poor defender. Would be nice to have a closer in the playoffs though.

to be fair, IT does a LOT of isos...I think Johnson would be a nice addition to our team but not necessary. If it was for a vet minimum and coming off the bench, I don't see it as such a bad idea...it'll bring more fire power to the bench but that's not going to happen.

The youth movement is now, we don't need someone who is on his way out of the league in 2 years

Probably only if someone gets hurt. I'd probably work him out, but I'm not 100% sure it wouldn't be better to give a lot more time to RJ Hunter in such a scenario

I see him going to Cleveland, not L.A. or Miami.

Would Joe ever see the court there? Cavs already have a 3-point specialist forward in James Jones, who gets no PT. And they also have Richard Jefferson.

why is Brooklyn going to buy out Johnson?  He is a free agent at the end of the year and tanking does them no good (and it isn't like he is taking minutes from a future "star").

To save cash this year. I expect JJ will want to get out and join a contender so he's be willing to leave some money on the table.

In regards to the other posters, Miami and Memphis make a lot of sense, maybe Cleveland put I think that's a bad fit for both sides. He isn't necessarily who you'd expect us to go for as he differs from our style but it's always handy to have a guy that can create his own shot and score in the clutch!
They don't need to save cash.  There is no reason to buy Johnson out.  In fact, Brooklyn might actually want to keep JJ around because they might actually want to bring him back next year (on a greatly reduced contract of course).  There is no reason for Brooklyn to buy out a starter that is an expiring contract.  They get nothing from it, since they can't improve their draft position and he isn't blocking minutes from any young player that has a long term future for them.

I fully expect Brooklyn to try and trade him before the deadline, I just don't think they will and don't see them buying him out either.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

You're underestimating agent relationships particularly when Brooklyn doesn't have anything to gain as it is by keeping him.

In the end it'll be up to Joe Johnson if he wants to stay or go and the pressure his agent manages to put forward. The rest is about dollar figures.

For example, Jeff Schwartz is part of Excel Sports Management... between them they also represent Rondae Hollis-Jefferson and Jarret Jack... and whatever high profile players they may have, particularly ones going into free-agency.

Thing is, IT's isos are very different. JJ just stands in one place and dribbles, indifferent to teammates. I'll pass.

Well judging by Deron Williams buyout it appears that they do like to save money. It's still a business.
As BudweiserCeltic said, agent relations play a part as well. It's rare that you see a case where a player wants a buyout and doesn't come to an agreement with the team. If they flat out refused to buy him out when that is his preference, what incentive does he have to come back next year? It would be a slap in the face for JJ.
Brooklyn sees itself as a free agent destination so I'd expect them to look like they treat players well. Otherwise they harm themselves

I don't think he would take us, Pitino treated him poorly while he was here.   Why would he want to come here after that?

He is a closer.
Once you are labeled 'the best' you want to stay up there, and you can't do it by loafing around.

Pitino wasn't around, so someone else treated him poorly.
