Poll: To keep or not to keep, Amir at 12m next year

I voted to keep Amir. My only question is whether he is healthy or damaged goods.

If he is healthy and we are getting no big as good or better than him through a trade, he needs to stay.

It would be only one more year. He could help young players develop. If it turns out good and he's not damaged goods, maybe the following year he can be signed for a four year deal with him becoming a PJ Brown for the last year or two.

He is in a tricky age group like Paul Pierce was when Danny gave him that huge four year deal or Washington with Gortat.

Amir is only 28, but he has a lot of tread on his tires. Nonetheless, he is our best big..... when healthy.

Maybe tear up next year's contract and change it into a four year deal? Why can't Amir Johnson be a rotation player in our next title? I know it depends on who we draft or what trades are made.

Amir Johnson is not the problem?

He's not the solution, either, and he's in steep decline.

No sense in keeping around these veterans who will be on the verge of retirement by the time the Celts are ready to go deep in the playoffs.  Need to use roster spots and playing time to identify long term contributors.  We have too many draft picks that will need playing time to afford keeping the Amir Johnsons of the world around.

I think you vastly undestimate Johnson.  If you go by advanced metrics such as WS/48, BPM, and VORP, he is the Celtics third-best player behind Thomas and Crowder.  Those don't accurately capture his value because he seems suited to playing 20-25 mpg and I wouldn't necessarily say he is the team's third best player, but it is reasonable to say that he is providing above-average starter-caliber production.  I rate him as a better player than Taj Gibson or Brandon Bass.  He's having as good of a season as he has ever had, if you adjust for his only playing 24mpg.

He's not a good defender (certainly not in the way they use him) and he's nothing special on offense. He's just an above average guy. Not worth the money

In a hypothetical world we trade for Cousins at 16+ million. We can't just trade draft picks for him. If we trade our young guys on 1-2 million dollar contracts we'd have to trade 5-6 of them just to get in the salary range if Crowder, Bradley, and IT aren't going out. If we aren't far enough under the cap to eat up the other guys salary, a big contract like Amir's 12 mil will go along way. It doesn't hurt to keep him if he's just going to expire anyway.

This. I would argue that Amir is our best big all around.  Easily the best defender and best athlete. He also has a reliable hook shot and shown some flashes on the 3. I like him because he fits with what you want in a center in the modern NBA game.

I voted 'Keep' but it all depends on everything else that happens. If we are in a position to let him go through other moves, I will be happy. Otherwise, he is doing okay and should probably stay until improvements are made.

Won't his contract next year be the last year? It is potentially a valuable trading chip, and the money that FAs this offseason are going to get is going to be ridiculous. Amir will seem like a bargain. Bank it.

This. Many here just doesn't get how valuable Amir's contract is to us, they only see the number without even thinking about why Danny made the deal. Yes he's overpaid but that's mainly because of the flexibility it offers us come trade deadline.

Depends. Depends who we sign. Depends who we draft. I like Amir though, and I like him at $12 million, so I'm fine with whatever happens as long as Lee and Turner are long gone.
