I wouldn't give up Lee for him and I hate Lee.  You're not winning a championship with him on your team. At least Lee will be gone in a few months

I have to agree with this. Gay is a black hole.
Isaiah, you were lightning in a bottle.

Always been a huge fan of Gay, but I'm convinced this guy cannot be anything more than the 3rd banana on a title team, and that's putting it lightly.

I like the premise of this thread, just not a fan of Gay at all.

Di we really have to sweeten it with a first?

Seems pretty fair especially if they resign Sullinger.

Say what you want about Gay, but he would bring a lot to the offense, and Crowder and Gay would be great during small bal lineups.

No thank you.  Give up 2 young good players, and Bradley being one of our best players, for a 29 year old on the decline of his career.

I still think of the Griz with Mayo and Gay. On paper they had a super talented starting 5 with what looked like top tier potential.

I still like Gay, especially since he can create his own shot BUT with Crowder's development this season I think we are set at the 3 spot. Jae can also defend anyone which makes up for the extra shots Gay might create.

We are solid 1-3 so we (Danny) need to focus on getting a 4 or 5 who can produce more than our current group. Ideally I'd add a Hortford type center and start KO, everyone else can go.
The Nets will finish with the worst record and the Celtics will end up with the 4th pick.

This based off the premise that he would take the 3 spot from Jae Crowder, but you fail to realize Crowder's versatility. In reality Jae Crowder is a 6'6" swingman. He can play the 2, 3, and 4. If we grabbed Gay and added him as a player that could create his own and be somewhat dependable in the 4th as a go to type of player than that makes us better. Avery Bradley is a good player and has been playing really well, but even at Bradley's best and at Rudy Gay's worst, Rudy is still a better player statistically and he adds shot creation that Bradley severely lacks.Bradley is very good at pull ups and running off screens, but when the fourth quarter comes around he struggles unless the cookie crumbles his way. Bradley has also stagnated statistically and has showed little improvement from his past few years. It's best to sell high on him right now and add an extra dimension to our team than just stick with the same old thing and hope it works again. I also feel like we can get Rudy on the cheap too considering what he's been had for in the past.

So you're giving away two starters to add a redundant piece that pushes our best two-way player either out of position or to the bench? Subtraction by addition, if there were ever any.

Well, I think Gay would be the power forward.  But yeah, like I said above, I don't think it really helps the Cs that much.

Quote
"Obviously everyone starts with 1s, 2s, 3s, 4s and 5s when they look at a basketball team," Stevens said. "I look at ball-handlers, wings, swings and bigs. I only have four categories. The more guys that can play the more positions, the better. Right now I think if you look at the roster, I think we have three of the four categories with a lot of depth. And I think that swing area where you can go 3-4 and play that way, that's the area we're going to have to adress as we move into the next few weeks and look at our team."

So based on this rationale we would probably have a greater need for a swing like Gay than a wing like Bradley (where we're really deep at).

Considering the fact that Bradley isn't a great ball handler you replace him with Gay in the lineup and not lose much in that regard.

So the starting lineup below would give us with enough offense, while at the same time giving us the ability to ensure we have enough size that we force teams to cover Smart with PG's, instead of crossmatching them on Bradley. This would allow much more postups for Smart, with enough shooting to have adequate spacing.

4 & 5 Olynyk/Johnson
2 & 3 Gay/Crowder
1 Smart

I am shocked/disappointed in how many guys here under-value Bradley on this team, both in terms of his improved shooting, his defense and his contract.

I would not trade him straight up for Rudy Gay.

I'm not sure we're undervaluing him, but instead looking objectively at his position and the makeup of our roster. We have invested 1st rd picks on 4 guys (Smart, Rozier, Hunter, and Young) that can man the 2 spot, but have nobody outside of Crowder with the size and strength to play the 3/4. I love Bradley's game, attitude, and contract and would feel differently if our roster breakdown were different.

Neither Gay nor Crowder can play SG. It's a nonstarter.

How so? Do you mean defensively?

Gay seems to make every team he plays for worse.

The only team he hasn't made worse is Sacramento, and that's only because they already sucked.

Seriously though, I don't want Gay. I don't think he would fit in much more than Jeff Green did. Could he put points on the board? Yup. Would he help the team overall? I don't think so.
