Try to keep the differing contracts out of the equation.  Assume hypothetically that if traded, Rondo signs an extension for about the same money owed to IT.

Rondo is back to being the assist machine he used to be in Boston.  At that time, many thought Rondo was in the discussion as one of the best PGs in the league if not a MVP candidate.  IT was a good back-up.  I think it is clear that IT has elevated and RR has declined but how much?

I am not sure how good I think IT is.  He has done way better this season than I would have predicted but I am not convinced he can sustain it or could be as productive on a true contending team.  Rondo seems to have turned the corner after the debacle in Dallas but is he actually good, a top PG again, or just stat padding?

And please, I know this is another Rondo thread, but try to spare the sarcastic posts just because this is about Rondo.  He is after all a fascinating player to discuss for a number of reasons.

I'd rather have Thomas. As incredible as Rondo is to watch, his attitude and the gaping holes in his game are not worth the things that he does do really well.

Rondo isn't putting up many more assists than he did for the portion of last season he spent here - per 36 he's actually down a tick.  His main improvement is that his scoring and shooting %s are up - 46% from the floor and 35 from 3.   If we didn't want him last year I don't see much that's happened to change that.

I think they'd be better together. Rondo as floor general, set-up guy, IT as 6th man and closer. Similar to what we had with Rondo and House, only with IT more capable of that closer role than House due to his vastly superior playmaking ability.

Trade Smart and Jerebko to Sacramento for Rondo and WCS.

His putrid shooting and minuscule scoring volume was the main reason people wanted him gone (with defensive effort and impending max contract being another factor).  Going from 8ppg on 41/25/33 shooting splits to 12ppg 46/35/50 is a pretty big change. His ppg, eFG and TS% are back on par with what he was doing pre-ACL.

So a lot has changed - the contract issues and defensive effort concerns are still there though.

By the same token, if Sacramento didn't want Thomas before I doubt they do now. A shoot first, somewhat defensive liability PG was never going to fit with Cousins/Gay etc.

Rondo has been a good starting PG thus far for them

Just checked his stat line -off to a better start than I thought.  Smart, Jonas and the better of Dallas/Boston 2016 might get us a little closer in value.

On a team that is struggling offensively, the proposal is to trade away our best offensive player?.....and for one who can't shoot free-throws for that matter?

I'll pass.

Seriously, though, I think both players are in situations that fit their skills.  There is a good reason both teams moved on from their former starting point guard.

Thought I read someplace that Boogie Cousins wasn't the biggest fan of IT or his game and is one of the reasons Sacramento moved on from Thomas. Cousins and Rondo, OTOH, are tight and their games compliment each other. Just see zero chance of Sactown ever wanting to do this trade. And they shouldn't and neither should the Celtics. Both players and franchises are better off for having moved on from their former PG.
