I see a lot of posters saying, "I wouldn't trade the 16 nets pick, but they can have the 18". That seems incredibly stupid. The nets are somewhere in the 3rd-6th worst team in the nba. Unless we get lucky (or unlucky, which is more likely the case), we will be picking 3,4,5, or 6 this year. If you project to 2018, the nets easily have the bleakest outlook. They have no picks coming in, and have no budding young stars. Their best player is very injury prone. There is almost no way they are not one of the worst teams in 2018, and I would put my money on them being the absolute worst. We also have 2 other 1st rounders this year, and like half of the 2nd round. I assume the reason is instant gratification, and you want the slim chance at a star right now. But looking at the nets and our position, isn't the 2018 pick better than the 2016?

Free agency could change he nets outlook long term, say hey max out Conley next year and find a capable starting wing add that to Lopez and young and they could at least be late lottery to playoffs next season

You didn't mention the 2017 pick swap.  If we are able to trade our pick that may be in the 20 range for a top 3 pick, that could turn out to be as valuable or more valuable than either of the other picks.

The problem with valuing these picks is that it is not just about how bad the Nets will be (I think they will be pretty bad for all of these picks).  There is also the luck of the draw (any of the picks could end up #1) and also the strength of the draft class.

Too many variables to make any reliable projection of the value but I think in terms of current trade value, we could get the most for the 2016 pick.  That doesn't mean it will produce the best player, just that it has the most market value right now.

The '16 Nets pick is looking like its almost a lock for a top 5 pick with some real potential to be a top 3 pick.

The '17 swap & '18 are still subject to possible roster upgrades by BKN.  It's not outside the realm of possibility that this could be their "bottom out" year and they slowly start to regroup and get better season via FA or trades.  Then continue that rebuild in '18.

This might be the only top 5 pick in the bunch and the Celtics best shot at the top overall pick using the Nets pick.  It certainly wouldn't surprise me although I certainly hope they continue to suck for the next few years.

let's stop acting like they don't have options considering free agency and Mikhail Prokhorov's deep pockets.... I say this upcoming pick is it as far as value

Pretty much the only way the 2018 pick is the most valuable is if the Nets decide to tank for 2019

The most valuable pick is definitely 2016.  After this year, the Nets will have significant cap space next summer and the following summer, with which to replenish their stock of NBA caliber players to put around Brook Lopez and Thad Young.

That's not to say the Nets will be particularly good.  They don't have the cap space or the cache to attract the kinds of players that will make them a good team.  But I expect they'll be a 30-40 win team after adding one or two 2nd/3rd tier free agents and a handful of journeymen types.

The opportunity for a top 5 pick is this year.

Of course, you never know when one of Brook Lopez's ankles will go, so I suppose a high pick will be in play in 2017 and 2018, as well.  Just not nearly as likely.

So the cap explodes and everyone has cap space. Brooklyn are really only going to be able to sign average FAs who are looking to get overpaid. I can see a full-blown disaster happening there by 2018

Picks' values are highest once their value is clear. At this point, the 2016 Pick has the most clear value, so it is the most valuable. Pick value is extremely fluid though.
