Would you take this trade?

Celtics get: DMC and Melo

Knicks get: Lee, Young, Rozier and half of all our picks

Kings get: Amir, Hunter, Mickey and the other half of all our picks*

I'm not really interested in if people think it is a realistic trade, I'm interested in what percent of the board would or wouldn't take it.

*we would keep a pick every other year for s many years out as they let you trade future picks.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
So you keep IT, Smart, AB, Crowder, Sully, KO, Turner, Zeller, and JJ and we still get to make a couple of first round picks in the coming years? I have to imagine that most people on this board are going to go with 'yes' since we keep literally all of our core players and only give up very young players and picks.

We would obviously be a legitimate contender.

I'd take it but the Kings & Knicks obviously wouldn't.

Yeah I know the Knicks and Kings would be unlikely to make a deal like this but that's not the point. The point is half of this board will say no to any trade with a nets pick. So it's hard to have a realistic conversation about potential moves.

A solid third of the forum would be against the 2016 nets pick for LBJ!

I'd say yes to Cousins no to Melo.

I was thinking something like that, but not for two players, only for one big name player (that way we keep our core).
I'm sure Danny and his team are considering all options to get us a star player, and among them there's also a package of numerous of picks and few players.
Would some of these teams even consider our offer if we give them draft picks (all picks are on the table, the question is how many) and quality players (all players are available):
Indiana (George), New Orleans (Davis) or OKC (Durant - only if he want's to sign here).
For example, what if Danny calls Bird, or Demps, or Presti, and offer them all of our BKN picks, all of this year's picks plus Smart (to me our most valuable player) and Lee as a salary filler. Would they even consider it, or would they hang up?
What do you think and would you do it?

Cousins would be worth including the Brooklyn pick for. Melo, not so much. I would like to keep the 2017/2018 Brooklyn swap/pick because I think the odds are they continue to be in the lottery and will increase in value as you actually get closer to the draft. Is it even possible to deal a "pick swap" right?

Sure, there's a chance Brooklyn will continue to try and be mediocre but at some point even they will have to admit it's not worth it and deal Lopez.

I think Melo is going to the Heat which would be fine with me. The Heat need to go for it now or Bosh and Wade will be too old. We do not have that urgency and can afford to be patient. In the next few years the current young teams that have been stockpiling talent will be forced to make decisions on their surpluses. Teams like the Bucks, Magic, Sixers, and T-Wolves.

Cousins will definitely be available by 2017 when he only has a year left on his deal. That may be the best time to strike.

Usually I would agree with you. In any other season. But the next 2 summers will be so out of the ordinary with the cap raises that it changes the equation. We should on;y be patient if we have to be. But if any star is gettable we need a very good reason not to get them. and while there are knocks on all the rumored to be available guys most if not all of them would be worth more than you would think.

Depends.  I mean half our picks could look like this

Kings - Amir, Hunter, Mickey, 1st's (2016 BKN, 2016 MIN, 2018 BOS, 2018 MEM), 2nd's (2016 PHI, 2016 CLE, 2017 BOS)
Knicks - Lee, Young, Rozier, 1st's (2016 BOS, 2016 DAL, 2018 BKN), 2nd's (2016 BOS, 2016 MIA, 2017 PHI, 2018 BKN)

I don't see those as terrible offers for the Kings or Knicks in those trades if they elect to move on from their stars.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

tempting.  I'd have to know which picks you're keeping and exactly how far out you're giving them away.  That's a ton of picks to be giving up without getting a quality PG in a deal (and less likely in a pick) so you're stuck relying on free agency to improve on IT (which we need to do for a starter).

Melo's also no spring chicken so I'd be reluctant to offer up that much for him.

On the plus side, the only player you're giving up that's a major rotation player is Amir so that's a plus.

in a heart beat

if we can keep IT, Bradley, Smart and Crowder? i mean, YES...HECK YES

Smart/Bradley/Melo/Kelly/DMC

offense instantly improves with the addition of Melo and DMC, and defense stays the same with Smart/Bradley

Bench

IT/Crowder/Sully

more offense and some defense off the bench

gives us many options on offense and defense. Not sure if NY or SAC says yes though...I feel it's more of us ripping them off lol

@slamtheking
this is how far the picks would do out and what we keep.

Top picks are great but if we made a deal like this we could sign guys that were top picks with the cap going up for 2 years.

What about 2017 Nets pick swap?

Can't trade that pick as in the idea I had Boston was trading its 16 and 18 picks and thus must keep its 17 pick (which is the pick swap with BKN).

that's pretty steep for both deals in terms of picks.  only first rounder left is the Nets swap left for 2017 until we get to the 2019 draft.   Not thrilled with having to rely on free agency to fill out the roster which will be a lot more expensive than cost-controlled rookie deals and hamstring us a bit that way.

as for the idea of signing guys that were top picks --> how?  unless they're guys who were top picks in the 90's.  No top pick worth anything would take a cut-rate deal to sign here.  They'll take the bigger money offered elsewhere if they're a top pick.

I do think the 8-man rotation would be pretty solid.  I don't see Zeller mentioned so I guess we'd keep him to backup DMC which would be a good move.
I'm not against the resulting roster, just concerned we're painted into a corner a bit when it comes to filling out the roster with quality players without any draft picks or depth to offer in trades (or using the picks in the draft).  I just recall the difficulties Danny had drawing good FA's during the KG/PP/Ray era with limited funds.  Any injury to Melo or DMC and that team is toast.
