Rockets Trade: Lawson, Ariza and Brewer
Nets Trade: Johnson, Jack

For the Rockets - They bring back $30 Million worth of expiring contracts, this is big if Dwight opts out because the Rockets will have a boatload of cap-space to build a team around Harden. They also rid themselves of Lawson, a ball dominant PG who does not play well next to Harden.

For Brooklyn - With D-Wills money still on the books, they're not going to have too much cap-space anyway. Losing isn't going to help their cause either, might as well bring in solid veteran pieces to put around Brook Lopez and T-Young. They'll be a cusp playoff team as they ride out the Lopez era then be  able to hit the reset button in a few years with all their own picks and a ton of cap-space in hand.

Who says no? Houston in obviously giving up more talent but they're going nowhere this season and might as shed some bad contracts and plan for the future.

Nets get a lot better with this...that would be horrible news for our pick...

Honestly,  I see King using the JJ contract to acquire talent from a team looking to hit the reset button. While it doesn't happen too often this day and age, I think there is a climate for it this season.

nets need to convert their trade ships (lopez, young, jack, expiring johnson) into draft picks or young talent and dont worry where their pick lands.

It makes no sense to just get a little better and maybe go for the playoffs just because we got their pick.

If they havr an opportunity to make the team better without hurting themselves long term, it absolutely makes sense to do it.  Making the playoffs would be big for them, both for keeping fans happy and for making money.

This would be a great trade for them, but I can't see Houston taking on JJs contract when they're this bad
I'm bitter.

Brewer can't be traded until January 15.  Houston is playing a bit better and would be in the playoffs right now.  I doubt they'd make the trade unless they fall off the cliff before the trade deadline.

The Nets bought out D-Wills contract for 27.5 mil and stretched it over 5 years.  So they're only taking a 5.5 mil cap hit each year.  With the cap jump, Johnson coming of the books and the D-Will savings, the Nets will have quite a bit of cap space next off season.  This trade probably helps the Nets some this year but I don't think they'd do it because of the out year cap hit.

I agree with everything, but if note Brewer can be traded as of December 15th.  He was signed using cap space, not the Eary Bird rights the Rockets had.

You may be correct but both the ESPN trade machine and the RealGM trade checker both state that he cannot be traded until January 15.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
I am not sure this makes the Nets much better - Jack is playing much better than expected and JJ is still holding off father time. Lawson should be able to take over Jack's role and Ariza / Brewer are two players (instead of just one in JJ), but we aren't talking vast upgrade here...and they certainly aren't getting anywhere near the playoffs with this trade.

For long term purposes, I guess it makes some sense, but it doesn't do much for them this year.
