Remains to be seen. What are the other offers for him? If not giving up the 2016 BKN 1, are we giving up Smart and other Nets picks?

One thing that we have of underrated value: Memphis' own future 1st. This will be of greater value to Memphis than any other team, because reacquiring this pick not only gives them one 1st back, but frees up future 1sts of theirs to be dealt.

I'd say a package centered around Smart, a 2017 or 2018 Nets pick, and Memphis' future 1st would afford us Gasol. But if we aren't willing to give up that much, we'll have to cough up the 2016 BKN 1.

Draft: 8 first rounders in next 5 years.

Is it possible? Unlikely. Is it worth it with the Nets Pick? No.

i don't understand this desire to package all our young guys to land a star that's already in their mid 30s.  it would cost a ton of assets just in order to get your first piece of a guy you'd be hoping other stars want to play with, and you have maybe a 3 year window of prime career left in order to build a championship roster with, before we'd be inevitably stuck with an aging roster, making lots of money, and prohibiting flexibility.  i get that it worked once before, but we already had our first star in PP.  here we're talking about essentially needing to trade first for an in his late prime PP, AND THEN ALSO figuring out a way to acquire the Ray and KG. the idea of diving headfirst into the opportunity to have a 2-3 year championship window just doens't make sense to me when the alternative is to slow play and let chemistry and morale develop amongst our young guys.  if we're trading for anyone i'd hope it's either a star still in his young prime or veterans that are great lockerroom guys and have some use but wouldn't cost a motherload to acquire (Amir would be an example of this type of player)

Marc Gasol will be 31 at the end of januray and based on his brothers who is 35 I would say its safe to expect very little decline in play for marc in the next 3-5 seasons.

The Cs will eventually have to do something with the assets they have gathered. A move for Gasol will clearly upgrade the center position on this roster while not compromising team chemistry. The logic behind my proposed trade is it would allow the Cs to keep their basic core, add a player who becomes arguably the best player on the roster, while hopefully retaining their most valuable asset (2016 nets 1st). The emergence of IT, AB and to ales extent Crowder plus the addition of Gasol makes this team a more attractive FA option.

If this Gasol trade and my suggested Martin trade are Phase 1. Then my Phase two would be to add a high ceiling talent in the draft ( Simons, Ingram, Bender, Brown, Labbisier) and upgrade the team with hopefully one FA. My first target would be Batum.

The Cs could potentially have the following 2016-17 roster

PG IT
SG AB
SF Batum
PF Amir
C  M Gasol
6th Crowder
7th KO
8th Martin
9th Rozier
10th Hunter/Young
11th Mickey

Depending on the Pick plug a potential young star into that roster VIA the nets picks and I think the Cs are well stocked for a long time.

i'll give you that i was wrong on Gasol's age.  Thought he was a few years older off the top of my head.  but my resistance remains.  for one, i believe we'd absolutely have to give up a Brooklyn pick, if not two.  Gasol is league wide acknowledged as one of the top 3 centers, if not a unanimous #1.  secondly, i can't see Memphis moving him if they don't receive a godfather offer for him, something i would pray DA has no interest in entertaining negotiations on (he is the face of their franchise and the guy both the offense and defense flows through after all).  Thirdly, Gasol is a born and raised Memphis guy.  the one given during his free agent year was that he would re-sign for the max in memphis, and if memory serves, there weren't even stories about other teams reaching out and dropping hints that they were interested.  This means that either A - it's already known by every team that he isn't leaving there, or B - his agent rebuffed every inquiry into his availability to leave the city.  add to the fact that there's tons of chatter about his brother joining him on the Grizz either during this season or signing there in the offseason and i just don't see this as a possibility, and would hope against it happening based on what we would need to give up.

i agree the time is coming where we need to part with some of our assets though, but as i said prior, i'd much rather see us add veteran pieces that aren't on terrible contracts and that can help us in various ways we need rather than strip the cupboard for a "star" on the wrong side of 30.  if you wanted to talk about going to NO and trying to get Tyreke and Anderson though, that'd get my attention.

I'd give up the Nets pick, but not simmons - if that makes sense. The Nets could win the lottery and it would be a disaster, but Gasol would be a pretty sweet consolation prize. Nets pick, RJ, ET and Terry might get it done.

I'm for recruiting Gasol . I like his devotion and tuffness .

I'm not sure he would fit CBS plans ?  But if he does .....then I would be for for signing him and making a run for 18

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
Would love Gasol, but his ties to Memphis maybe too difficult to overcome in getting him in a trade. They still have time to re-tool around him and Conley (if he re-signs).

Besides, we just need to get through next season and we can sign Noel outright. He would have to choose his hometown of Boston over the disaster that is Philly, right? Obviously not the offensive force we desire, but at least we won't need to give up anything for him.
