The 2016 draft talent drops off significantly after Ben Simmons, I think that is universally agreed.

This got me thinking... If we land out of the number 1 spot in the lottery, could trading the Brooklyn pick be enough to obtain a top 5 picked player from the previous two drafts? The talent levels from the last two drafts were pretty high within the top 5, so I think there may be better value there than in this 2016 draft.

If you think it could, which player(s) would most likely be offered for the pick?

2014 top 5:
  • Wiggins
  • Parker
  • Embiid
  • A. Gordon
  • Exum

2015 top 5:
  • Anthony-Towns
  • Russell
  • Okafor
  • Porzingis
  • Hezonja

We could get Embiid, Gordon, or Exum. That's about it.

I guess it depends how the prospects at the top of this year's draft look.    A few weeks ago I saw some folks here were suggesting that they'd trade Marcus Smart for any of the top 5 guys in this upcoming draft... so maybe that's something.

Also depends on where the Brooklyn pick ends up, of course.  Still not a guarantee it ends up in the top 5.

i used to have similar thinking to there being little beyond Simmons, but the more of this college season I watch the more I think this class has a chance to be a very solid one at the top, much in line with the Wiggins/Parker/Smart/Randle class

There's no realistic combination of players that would convince Danny to give up the pick, considering your hypothetical has it becoming the #1 selection. Hezonja, Gordon and 2016 ORL 1 would probably get him thinking, but I can't see him passing up a shot at Simmons for second and third tier prospects.

edit: On second thought, if Philly had the 2nd or 3rd pick and was willing to hand over their pick + Okafor, that also would be intriguing, but I still don't think Danny would bite.

You must have not read his whole post. He states that if the Brooklyn pick becomes number one, is there a player or combination of players (only possible candidates would be Orlando with Gordon/Hezonja or Philly with Embiid/Okafor) that would convince Danny to surrender the pick, and thus Ben Simmons.

We could get any player sans Towns and perhaps Wiggins/Porzingis, or any realistic combination of players from the past two drafts if we had Ben Simmons in our hands and foolishly sought to give him up.

I'm not too impressed with the class so far.  Simmons looks really good except for the lack of a jump shot.  Teams are already playing off of him.  Daring him to shoot.  I like Ingram a lot.  Haven't seen Brown yet.  Skal is a disappointment so far and definitely a project.  Bender is a project.  Murray looks pretty good but his lack of quickness concerns me.
