Some of those wins were in Minny, all of us with the team in Boston.   Lakers are a transplant team, same for their titles won with Mikan.

What I don't understand is the inconsistency with this stuff. When the Pelicans changed their name from the Hornets, it was agreed that all Hornets records/history move back to the city of Charlotte; so, even though the Hornets franchise moved to New Orleans, the city of Charlotte maintained all of those previous statistics.

Why do the Lakers get to claim the titles that should [in theory] belong to the Wolves (based on the assertion above)? Is it just because they didn't technically change their name...when they clearly should have?

The main reason is that when LAL relocated there were no Timberwolves (founded in 1989).

So, technically LAL has the right to claim these titles altho it's a rather lame move.

It's common wisdom that they lay claim to the Minneapolis titles and there's nothing we can do about that.  It's Celtics 17 and Lakers 16.  And it makes me sick each time I think that it's this close.  In the 70's when I was in high school and the C's were winning with Hondo, Cowens and JoJo, the lead seemed insurmountable --  13 to 6.  Even after the Bird/Magic era, it was a comfortable 16-11.   But now it's all about whichever team can turn it around first.  The odds are always stacked in the Lakers favor as they'll always have the FA advantage.  It would be nice if the lottery gods would not shine upon them again this year.

Wolves have no claim whatsoever to those championships.  I guess I can accept that an argument can be made in good faith saying the lakers should still be able to claim those titles, I just don't agree with that argument.  Still, as mentioned above I find it completely bush league that out of the blue 15 years ago they decided to start claiming those Minneapolis titles.

Do they though?  Yes, Shaq went there and that really tipped the scales but that was 1996 and Jerry West was the guy making the pitch.  What free agents have they signed since then?  Gary Payton and Karl Malone were older stars looking to win a championship so they went to one of the best teams in the league at the time.  Other than that all their big names have been either through the draft or by trade.  Artest (I honestly can't remember if they signed him or traded for him)?

Thankfully, Dwight Howard left them...breaking the mold as far as superstars in LA.

I'm glad for it.

As much flak as he takes from Laker fans for this, I am ecstatic that he left them in FA.
