I'm not going to talk trash about Young.

I was very pleased with his 20 mins that he played last game.

Here is what I see excellent quickness for a legit 6'6" wing with a 7 foot wingspan. Very good athleticism  overall except the ability to explode off the floor going to the rim.

For those who recorded the game he did actually do that for his first hoop. I was so amped! He made an NBA drive to the rim. He took two dribbles and exploded vertically into the defender and finished with a fairly difficult left handed Layup.

For a guy with tons of ability and athletism, he usually has no idea how he's going to finish near the rim.

I watched everything I could on Young the other day back to high school, and this is how his drives go. Head down two hard dribbles and almost never makes it all the way to the rim, puts his shoulder down into the defender and just stops for about an awkward 10 foot floater, but it's so awkward it seems he never has a plan.

Please give Young some advice on how to drive like a Pro, cause if he figures that out he could be a force in the league, if not we won't resign him and he fizzles out.

Learn the force Young. It is within you.

  • Celtic's only raise championship Banners
I think before you post anything about a player and give your opinion you should have watched his videos from hs-aau-summer tourneys-tournaments in general.....really everything. Maybe its because I only watch the Celtics but I find time for the players that intrigue me and even more for the players that we drafted like Young.

James has a crafty way about his finishes. I think your right that he needs to get better at asserting himself and learning the right way. I think in time that will happen because he is such a liability from 3 that a good fake or anything will create space and he will drive.

Didn't I say That? He finishes funny around the rim, he made one good move last game. He needs to get better at finishing at the rim if he wants to truly be a good player.

I see him as more of a shooter than a slasher.

I don't think he has the ball-handling / moves necessary to get into the paint often enough. I think finishing in the paint is a lesser problem than actually getting there (with regularity).

He has a nice array of shot making ability. Spot up shooting. Coming off screens. And a nice one-two dribble pull up jumper. Along with transition scoring and a few basic drives, James Young should be able to score in mid to high teens regularly when given long minutes.

this is why he needs red claws, kelly was quoted celts have one practice a month
the closeness to boston he can attend home practices and games while getting his reps up north where he should be advised to shoot less threes and work on getting to hoop right hand as well as left-one on one with mickey and rozier to develope creativity
-if you can score against those two your doing fine
gym and drills -hard to believe this kid is only still 20
the press has mickey working on hitting three's and improving shot-

Who, I agree with you in that his shooting is his strong suit. It's that you don't often see an NBA wing   that doesn't have a clue how he's going to finish going to the hoop.

one year out of high school and the kid is facing speed and bigs and length and vertical and he has to play defence against the best in the world
he is skinny and young and caught on court at boston garden bacause he,s got a stroke-every second he must have been worried he would be exposed-all he could do was shoot but he was frozen with fear-he was **** not ready, his spots have too be chosen he still is not **** ready
the kid needs more time but he is developing a work ethic and has a good group around him

  • Rondo doesn't believe in easy buckets...
His biggest problem is lack of confidence or just being nervous in general.

As for not being able to get to the rim, that has everything to do with his ball handling. He has a weak right hand and is average with the left. Unless his man completely bites on a pump fake or gets beat on a close out Young's not really going to get very far into the paint. I think he will develop into a decent enough driver, but his future is as an off the ball threat coming off of picks and cutting behind defenders.

Young should model his game after Ray Allen. Just continue to work on his shot, quick release, running around the floor to get open.  Ray hardly ever just stood around. Young always seems to be just standing around.  Richard Hamilton another good role model. Kid has a sweet stroke.

He needs to learn to finish strong with is right. It makes it really easy to defend if he can't change direction in a instant.

James Young's biggest problem? James Young. If he would gain some confidence and maintain his effort then there are available minutes on the wings.
Isaiah, you were lightning in a bottle.

IMO his biggest problem is footwork.

Take Pierce, for example... Especially the KG-era Pierce.  Good-not-great athlete, average quickness, good handle for his size... But his footwork might have been the best in the league for a small forward.  He was always balanced and in control, and he was crafty enough with the ball to be able to attack an opponent leaning the wrong way with either hand.  (Being strong as a bull and a knockdown shooter are helpful too, lol).

Young, as a counterpoint, is a comparable athlete but lacks the footwork, and that affects his game in many small ways.  It's why he usually looks out-of-control on drives, it's a major factor in defending screens (his biggest defensive flaw IMO) and it can also impact his shooting stroke at times.
