Things have looked much more cohesive the past few games with this unit. The depth this team has looks like it's really beginning to pay off. I'm not going to make any bold predictions about our chances because I still stick to my belief that the east is much tougher this year than it was last year, but I will say I think we are definitely better than we were last year. Smart, Sully, and KO all look a notch better than they did in April. Amir and Lee haven't necessarily been godsends as additions but they are upgrades compared to Bass and Zeller. IT, Crowder and Jerebko look like they've picked up where they left off last season. Bradley and Turner look just fine as the Celtics rotation players.

I do think that when this team hits its full throttle as a contender (which will happen sooner rather than later), guys like IT and Crowder should be coming off the bench. It's nothing against those guys, but they bring so much needed energy on a second unit because of what they bring on both ends of the court (IT's offense, Crowder's defense). That's what's scary about the potential of this team. The guys who are starting and are giving the team good production as starters are ideally bench guys. All we have to do is wait for the star players to come and the Celtics will be a force to be reckoned with. The Celtics have the assets to do just that. It's a matter of who they get and when they get them.

The Celts seem to be figuring out a main unit that gives them the best chance to compete with opposing starters, which is big and should help them get going.

I think the team is as good as we thought -- they will look good some nights when their depth is a major weapon, and they'll look totally overmatched other nights when their lack of dangerous scorers, aside from a guy shorter than me, means they just can't score enough points to win.

Defensively, the Celtics are far better than the sum of their parts.  Brad Stevens deserves so much credit for that, while the addition of Amir Johnson and Jae Crowder to the starting lineup in place of Evan Turner and Tyler Zeller, and the continued defensive maturation of Sullinger and Olynyk, cannot be overlooked.  If the Celts remain a top 10 defensive team, their ceiling will be closer to 50 wins than 40.

I think the defense may look a little worse once the Celts face a larger number of quality offensive teams, but it's also possible Brad is just making chicken salad out of you know what, again.  The Celts were solid defensively last year, after all, and arguably they improved their personnel on that end to a modest extent.

Call me a pessimist, but my opinion remains that the Celts won't be truly dangerous until they get another top scoring option or two ... perhaps the continued growth of Marcus Smart, plus the addition of Jaylen Brown or Ben Simmons with the 2016 Nets pick, will provide those scoring options.

My guess is still 40-45 wins for this team, but if they get hot late in the season they could get to the 50 wins that some people predicted for them.  Then again, a bad run of injuries, or just bad luck in close games, could see them finish at or below the 40 wins they had last year.

It's still super early.

I've said all along that this team could be as high as a two seed and as low as a ten seed, granted both of those seeds would require the right context, e.g. Eastern conference injuries or trades.

Outside of Cleveland, who is definitively better than us? Miami? Chicago? Hawks? Raptors? I think we're in the conversation with each one of those teams not named Cleveland.

I definitely think we could win enough to have home court advantage for a series this year.

I'd still take any of the teams you named over the Celts (talking likelihood, not saying it's impossible for the Celts to do better), but the rest of the East is a grab bag.

Bucks, Wizards, Pistons, Pacers, Celts, Hornets, Magic, Knicks ... I have no idea what order those teams will finish in.

This feels like a team that won't throw away games against bad teams, will have a winning record against the tier of teams that have legitimate but unguaranteed playoff hopes, and will steal a few games from the teams that are considered playoff locks.

Last two games they have played really well, but they should be up and down all season ... Slightly more ups than downs.  45 wins still seems appropriate.  Can't overreact when we lose badly and you can't overreact when we win greatly.  They are doing exactly what an up and down team does.

Sounds right to me.

We need to play better teams to understand how good we are.

Raptors, Spurs and Pacers are key challengers (and we lost to all three).  Teams that can shoot, able to put mobile defenders on our bigs for example have caused hell for us so far.

Also if they have a super player like George. A stud SF has given us all kinds of issues so far
OKC, Washington and Atlanta are key challengers too and we beat them. Quite convincingly beat then too.

The Celtics are right about where they should be. They'll beat bad teams and be .500 against very good teams and lose against elite teams. After 10 games or so, it's what they have shown and it is what they are

the 2nd half of season as team injuries and players get lazy on defence and other teams are thin with depth, so i have the celts closing strong like last season
-if rj starts hitting at high rate and zeller will start playing more running their bigs and hitting mid range and isaiah gets better when teams stop playing defence and stars get lazy-nobody will want to face smart, avery crowder  and sully on the boards-

They're improving and I expect they will continue to as CBS figures out the rotations.

I don't think he ever will, the way our roster is built I think anyone can be replaced in the lineup at any given moment.

At the same time, I enjoy seeing him not being afraid to insert people in and out of the starting lineup.

IT4, Smart and Bradley

when Smart/Bradley went down, IT4 took starting position, then when Bradley came back, he remains on the bench

not a shot at Doc but 99% of the time, whenever an injured star comes back, they get their starting role immediately, the only other time I remember that wasn't the case was Bradley starting over when Ray Allen came back

Good luck, we've been waiting for this since 2013.

Somewhere between Cleveland and LarBrd33's take...
