Smart was due for a good game.  He was shooting 37%/32%/63% over the second half of last season... had been shooting 32%/24%/72% so far this season.   He looked a little better in pre-season.  It's been a long time coming.  Hopefully this was a breakout game and he keeps it up.

Looks as if Marcus Smart has gotten into Russell Westbrook's head KG style.

No, this was actually a really good game for Smart.   It skyrockets his season averages to 39%/30%/69%.  It's a great sign and I hope he keeps it up.

Want to see something oboxious?  Watch the highlight video on ESPN's game-recap:

 http://espn.go.com/nba/recap?gameId=400828036

Here's what it shows:

Highlight #1 - Westbrook burning Thomas and comments about how great he is without Durant.

Highlight #2 - Westbrook with a great assist.

Highlight #3 - Westbrook blocking the hell out of Marcus Smart.  Mentions that Westbrook finished with 27 points (no mention of him going 5-20 in the game).

Highlight #4 -  Isiah Thomas 3-pointer.

HIghlight #5 - Thomas with another 3-pointer.  Casually mentions that the Celtics won.

Seriously... watch it... forget about Westbrook throwing shade at Smart... that video is straight up insulting.   Zero mention of anything positive Smart did.  The only Smart-related highlight is him getting blocked badly by Westbrook.

Legit question...do you actually watch most games? Because it seems as though all of your comments are stat related and a box score doesn't tell a complete story. This could explain why you love guys like Randle, who gives up on one end more than he gets you on the other, but don't like Smart since his offensive usage rate isn't as high as it would be if he were on one of the sorry teams you adore (LAL, Philly, Brooklyn).

Of course I watch the games.  Smart's been a good 1-way player.  Randle has been pretty good 1-way as well.    Tonight was a unique game from Smart.  Hope he keeps it up.

See that's where I disagree with you about Smart. Even as a rookie last year, he has a knack for hitting big shots and making big plays. Plus, you fail to ever talk about his motor, his high BB IQ, and the little things he does that help you win, but don't show up in a box score. This season his offensive game has improved a lot even though "stats" don't reflect it. He's taking it to the basket a lot more, he's hitting the slipping big on his roll to the basket off a pick, he's posting up, etc.

Why is that you said the other day that Stauskas is "actually playing good" when his offensive numbers are worse than Smarts and he provides 0 defense, but then you call Smart a 1 way player? Those are the issues I have with your posts. They're just so blatantly biased and lack any consistency when you compare how you assess Cs and non-Cs players.

As for Stauskas, he's playing so good that he was completely benched last game during the second half after going 0 for the field and scoreless during the 1st half. You would've been all over that discussion here if it had happened to Smart.

this kind of reminds me of when chris paul did something similar to Rondo way back in their early yr's.

Stauskas was atrocious in his last game.  That was an abomination of a performance.

I've at no point claimed Stauskas is a better prospect than Marcus Smart.   He's got some promise, though.  For the season he's averaging 11 points, 3.3 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1 steal on 33%/28%/72% shooting.  Shot hasn't been falling and he could see a hit in minutes for a while.

After tonight's huge performance, Smart is averaging 12.5 points, 3.2 rebounds, 3 assists and 1.5 steals with 39%/30%/69% shooting.

You're right, stats don't tell the whole story.   Stats show them as roughly even... you'd never know that Smart was sensational in his last game and Stauskas was horrid.   Who knows what those guys will look like several months/years from now, though.

Fwiw, Randle is averaging 11 points, 8.4 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1 steal with 42%/0%/58% shooting.  He's showed some signs as well, but I think it's fair to say Smart is still a better asset for now.

Aaron Gordon has been interesting, but isn't yet getting the minutes.  9 points, 5 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 1 block, 1 steal with 45%/24%/69%, but he's playing 20mpg while those other guys are playing 30.  He's another one to watch.

That entire draft class (beyond Wiggins) was brutally disappointing in year 1.  It'll be interesting to look at them a few years from now, though.  I think several of those guys will look a lot better... hopefully Smart included.

Also, I commented after game 1 that Smart looked solid.  He played within the system on offense.  Still, tonight was long overdue.  You have to really reach to say Smart has been impressive offensively up until this game.

Im counting down the day we play GSW and Curry has the same reaction.

A credit to Curry though, I don't think he'd react in this way.

He seems like a pretty grounded guy - seems like the type who would give credit where it's just and respect the opponent.

Curry praised Bradley a couple of times the last few years I think.

I'm referring to Westbrook as "81 games" from now on
we will play them once more, so maybe "80 games"

Based on the last couple of seasons, especially considering his style of play, it'll probably be a safer bet to call Westbrook "60ish games" from now on.

In regards to Smart, he's the kind of guy you absolutely despise when you're playing against him, like Dennis Rodman, Ron Artest, Kevin Garnett, Joakim Noah, etc.  I won't be expecting too many compliments from opposing teams regarding Smart.  Whether they admit it or not, you know they hate going against him and would love to have him on their team, which is the ultimate compliment even if they would never admit it.

After 18 months with their Bigs, the Littles were: 46% less likely to use illegal drugs, 27% less likely to use alcohol, 52% less likely to skip school, 37% less likely to skip a class

Westbrook isn't wrong though.....

It was more of the way he said it. "I do this. Don't get it twisted." I just think it's a bad look for him, especially when it was clear that Marcus did "do this" and contained him.

this is true also, Smart did a great job containing Westbrook. I think I saw some crazy stat yesterday about Westbrook usually touches the ball at least once every possession and there was a couple of times where Smart denied him from actually touching the ball...

overall, Westbrook is right though, he does do this every single game, he is a walking 20-5-5 guy AT LEAST, especially with Durant out for 2 weeks. He himself is an MVP candidate who by himself almost took the Thunder to the playoffs.

I hope that does light a spark in Smart, I don't mind seeing him average 20 ppg, he can chuck 4 3s a game if he wants if he can get me 20 a game lol

Yep. Basically the same thing with NBA.com. The recap of the game is ok but the 4 of the 5 highlight videos are of Thunder plays.

smart savaged his hand with two dislocations and then out with bad toe was rusty for a few games-this kid makes no excuses and holds nothing back
he is still young and i can imagine his d mid season and his offence when players start coasting
i believe 2nd half of season the celtics defence and depth will be the talk of the nba-and is allready
marcus, crowder, amir and now turner is ripping the ball away, jerebko is seriously active and pairs well with kelly or dare i say it rj
there will be some tired legs today, this stretch since fri will test our depth
-amir should be rested and zeller get some time
how will brad work the minutes tonight with isaiah, smart, amir and sully ?????
