Yea I mean I completely understand why someone would want randle at it just so happens that at the moment randle is playing really well and Marcus is struggling.

I think every game you watch Marcus play he makes a play that makes you go "wow" I love watching him play and think he will be really good for a long time. For Randle I'm a bit skeptical due to the good stats bad team argument.

Give me a guy like Marcus any day. I love what he brings. Hope he's on the Cs for the next decade.

I still have a lot of love for Smart.  I think his defense is special.   Randle has flaws in his game, but dude definitely has a bright future.

It's tough to pick because of Smart's intangibles and defense, but me personally, I value a player based on what the market says. I personally think Randle has more trade value because he can score and rebound. I mean he could be a very good offensive player if he gets a nice mid-range game. It's possible. I just haven't seen much improvement from Smart and it's concerning. This is really Randle's rookie year.

I'm kind of bleh on both of them.

So many other young players that are a step up from these two as far as potential.

Beyond the basic stats Randle is of the worst PF's in the league

At least Smart is in the positive on account for his defense

If you go to BasketballReference and filter by the VORP stat (which stands for Value Over Replacement Player), you will see that Julius Randle's number is absolute last in the NBA.

I'm not sure how that stat is derived, but I've found it to fairly well align with how well players actually play and how much they contribute to their team's winning.

I think it is in part based on on/off stats, another number in which Randle is woefully deficient, particularly on the defensive end.

So, yes, Randle's a great rebounder with some nice skills and some potential, but it's a bit hasty and presumptuous to definitively proclaim him a better prospect than Marcus Smart at this point.

Julius has some growing to do.  Time will tell if he reaches his potential.  Same for Marcus.

Sure, let's completely ignore defense and context.

I remember when I took stats without considering their context and used them to provide evidence for my own personal beliefs #confirmationbias
Isaiah, you were lightning in a bottle.

This is a a fair point. The reason I made this post was to share my thoughts on the future. I think Randle has the athletic ability to work on his defense and become good on the pick and roll. I'm really using the eye test and there is a chance Randle becomes an automatic 20 and 10 with a relatively high fg%. He's going to be playing with Russell and that is going to a deadly pick and roll duo for years to come. So yes, the metrics say Randle is a liability on defense, but when the Lakers start winning, he'll catch up to Smart. I think being on a good team will help him with that metric.

It sounds like you might be starting to agree that the case isn't closed on Smart vs. Randle just yet.

Randle does look good at times and will probably be a good player long term. But I am still sticking by Smart. His defense is just that good, he comes in and contributes right away and helps this team win. Smart has one of the highest +/- on the team and our record reflects that. I won't say Smart is better than Randle, but I'd say this is a topic we revisit like 2-5 years down the line when both teams are competing at a very high level for a championship, and both teams are back in contending form (if both players are still here of course)

My friend who is a lakers fans said that Randle is a negative on the team right now. Does a lot of things that show up in the box score but are empty. Takes rebounds from own teammates, slacks on D, doesnt pass well. Russell on the other hand he believes will be a star.
