Hypothetically, what do you guys think would happen if the Cs found themselves in a similar position to the Cavs in the 2014 offseason?

For example, let's say the Cs finish with around 50 wins and a top 3 seed in the east, and maybe even win a round or two in the playoffs. Let's also say they get a top 4 pick from the Nets as the Nets could very well be AWFUL.

If this occurred, it wouldn't shock me if we snuck up out of nowhere to get a Durant or Dwight Howard or a top-tier player, due to our great coach and up and coming team.

If this were to occur, do you think Ainge would (or should) trade that top 4 pick (which could be Simmons, Inghram, etc) to get another star, or do you think he should keep the player?

I personally think if he's high on the draft pick then we should keep him to extend our period of winning/potential dominance for a very long time.

What do you guys all think?

If we land KD than I would say trade our top 5 pick if a star is available, but I would also love to see a top tier talent becoming a star in Boston!

But in my opinion KD would be more willing to sign with us if we get established talent

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
The big problem is that we don't have the top 10 NBA player yet.
Making the 2nd round of the playoffs and getting 50 wins is great, but we need elite basketball players if we are going to have dreams of the Eastern Conference finals.

Danny will always try and get whichever elite players are available or might be available, and if it means we have to give up one of those picks then he will definitely pull the trigger as we've seen before.

Unfortunately those top 10 players don't become available very often, so it's likely that we'll end up taking the draft pick and using it to take someone we like and continue down the same trade and seek strategy of drafting well, and moving those draftees for better pieces when the opportunity arises.

I can't see any scenarios where top 5 or even top 10 NBA players will be available to us over the next few seasons. Perhaps Cousins or Kevin Love if things go bad- but we're probably going to have to build from within and cross our fingers that the Nets picks are good, and we draft well with them.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

considering the draft will occur prior to free agency, Danny will like take that pick rather than trade it for a star pre-draft.  depending on who that pick turns out to be, we may be better off keeping that pick and adding to our current pool of talent.

I just don't see Durant leaving OKC and if he did, it would be probably to Washington where he's from.  From what I've heard and read, he doesn't seem to be disgruntled in any way with OKC so I'd be surprised if he left there.

I get what you're saying, but NBA players are high on Brad, including those from other teams. Plus, going to the east would offer an easier path to the Finals and winning a title. Boston also has a ton of draft picks and other assets which make it appealing.

The reason I brought up KD is because there is a history there. When we tanked in 07, we wanted KD badly. Ainge even got fined for sitting next to KD's mom while scouting him in college and talking to her. For some reason if we overachieve and get a top 5 pick, I could see Durant or another top player wanting to come here...
