Say Thompson's agent comes to you and says look, Tristan wants to come to Boston on a 4 yr maximum and that the Cavs will do the sign and trade for Lee and Sullinger.

Do you do it?

Nope.  There'll be a lot of debate over how good TT actually is, but the important thing is that he's not the guy you build around, he's the guy you put around your centerpieces, and we don't have those yet.  Same reason there'd've been little point throwing a max deal at Draymond Green.

I wouldn't either.

What I would do is trade them Lee, Sullinger, and the Dallas (perhaps even the Brooklyn) pick for Love in order for them to commit fully to TT.  ;D

Thompson would be useless on a team like the Celtics. Much more so than Sullinger. He can't create his own shot or pass and he doesn't provide the one defensive quality they sorely lack: rim protection. Easy decision.

I don't disagree with that, but we keep hearing about the cap going up and how contracts aren't going to mean the same and all that crap, so I'm not sure the money is that big of a deal.  Thompson is better than Sullinger and Lee has no long term future here, so it really just comes down to the money.  I think Thompson could easily be a 12/10 guy, he gets up and down the floor well, is generally in the right position, etc.  He is obviously a role player, but he is a darn good role player and is probably a top 3 offensive rebounder in the league.  He would add some real credibility down low.

The real question is, if you sign Thompson does that hurt Boston's ability to sign a free agent.  Given I don't think Boston will be much of a player in free agency the next couple of summers I don't see the harm in giving money to Thompson.

Nope. His skill-set (unskilled PF like Faried) is too limiting to future personnel / roster decisions. As others have said - a player you add after the rest of your core is already in place and you know whether he is right fit or not. Fit is vital for Thompson. Value fluctuates widely depending on teammates and whether they can make up for his limitations (defensively at center or offensively at PF).

A definite no for all of the reasons described above - he'd be a poor fit.

Having said that, if he was our player on a cost-controlled deal I'd be looking to keep him, but he's after an awful lot of money for a one-trick pony.

I think I'd rather have Lee expire and Sully get a small deal

No.  TT is a finishing piece, the Celts are still figuring out what the foundation for this team will be.

Tristan Thompson is the kind of player I love to root for.  I would love to have him on the C's and I think his style of play would fit perfectly with the franchise and Coach Stevens system.  I love guys who I feel can just energize a whole team through hustle and hard work.  He'd be Tommy's new favorite player and the team leader in Tommy points.  But I also love bargains...

This whole contract situation has me worried about Thompson now.  Before, he came off like a team first role player, like Perk, Posey, Crowder, Udonis Haslem, etc. (which goes back to why I love to root for him).  Now he's coming off like a prima donna.  Not that I have any problem with a player trying to get the most money he can, but clearly the market isn't there for what he's looking for and he's still holding out.  This has changed my whole perception of him.  Has his brief success gone to his head?  So if the Cavs, C's, or any team does eventually sign Thompson to what he's looking for, is he still going to play his game?  Is he going to demand to start?  Demand to be more involved in the offense?  Be upset if he's being overshadowed?  Demand to be traded in the middle of his contract?

Plus I'm not very fond of his agent.  This whole situation has me wondering about the head on his shoulders and who he allows to give him advice.  How could he not at least take the qualifying offer?

While I'm super intrigued by this whole situation, it's pushing me further and further away from wanting him on a team I'm rooting for.
