I know it's asking a lot of Brad Stevens, but I think this would be a golden opportunity for him to showcase his coaching ability at the highest level. Showing how he can coach the most elite players in the US would provide great exposure to the entire country, as well as the players that don't know what he can do.

Even at the end of the game, we lined up in different formation that he hadn't seen and he called out our play before I got the ball. I heard him calling it out. -John Wall on Brad Stevens

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
While it would certainly be an honor, I think I would rather have Stevens focus on the Celtics rather than on our national team. He is quickly building a name for himself around the league and a couple more successful seasons under his belt and he will be considered one of the top coaches in basketball.

if he coaches a team full of NBA allstars, those players might consider boston more during free agency. You always here how the players that play on Team USA love Coach K. If BS works his magic on team USA, free agent talent might sign here.

I think it would be really cool
Azzurri | Juventus | Boston Celtics | Kentucky Basketball

"All the negativity that’s on Celticsblog sucks. I’ve been around when Kyrie Irving was criticized. I’ve been around when Al Horford was insulted. And it stinks. It makes the greatest team, greatest fans in the world, lousy."

It seems unlikely, but on the other hand they'll probably want a younger coach so they can keep some consistency over the next few Olympic cycles.  Stevens seems well-regarded everywhere so I suppose it's plausible enough.

While it's probably not likely to happen, it's worth noting that Coach K really likes CBS. He coached against him in a close National Championship game and had this to say when Stevens was hired:

Quote
But no one has been more effusive in his constant praise of Stevens than Duke's Mike Krzyzewski, the USA Olympic and national team coach. Krzyzewski was quick to compliment Stevens in the lead-up to the 2010 national title game. Coach K's Blue Devils beat the Bulldogs 61-59 -- in Indianapolis -- in one of the most epic national title games in the past 25 years.

Krzyzewski said he was as surprised as everyone else by the Celtics tabbing Stevens. But he said that's because "Brad is one of the great college coaches. He's an outstanding coach. He's at a time -- he's young -- I can see him wanting to do something different. He's terrific. It's a great hire for the Celtics."

"He's really smart," Krzyzewski said. "His teams play that way. He's just a heckuva of a coach. He has a maturity of an established head coach right away. I just think -- forget about young coaches -- I think he's one of the best coaches. I don't think you could have a better guy. He's smart and he'll adapt. I think he'll do a really good job there."

Quote
Krzyzewski isn't worried about the veteran NBA players giving him instant credibility in the locker room and in the huddle.

"He'll have respect," Krzyzewski said. "He's accomplished. Players respect success. He's had great success right away. So I don't think he'll have any problem with the players respecting him. They'll respect him. They respect excellence. He has it. It's a terrific hire. I'm a friend of his and I wish him the very best and I'll be pulling for him. To take over one of the most storied franchises in sports in an incredible opportunity, I can understand him doing it."

I don't think he's the front runner, but I would like to think he's in the discussion, maybe with Steve Kerr, Tom Izzo. Billy Donovan, and Monty Williams?  Guys like Pop and Jim Boeheim (current assistant) are too old, plus I don't think they'd want to commit to it at this point.  Then you also have Tom Thibodeau and Monty Williams as the other current assistants, though I don't think the players will want to come out to play for Thibs, so no way he can be coach, and Monty Williams doesn't exactly have a good track record as head coach but I'd have to think he's a threat as he's already on the inside.  Billy Donovan has been coaching the u-18 and u-19 Team USA teams since 2012 and is undeafeated, as long as he doesn't implode with the Thunder, he's probably the #1 contender.

Part of it depends on when they'll name a replacement and there's no tournament in 2018 now (moved to 2019) so that changes things up too.

2016: Olympics with Coach K
2019: Next FIBA tournament
2020: Next Olympics

With the commitment Team USA has asked for from players in recent years, it would make sense to give them a break and not have any kind of camp in 2017.  So maybe Team USA names a coach sometime in the '17-'18 season for their next camp in the summer of '18?

That would give Stevens at least 2 more years to build his resume.  And if a guy like Kerr continues to make several deep playoff runs during that time, last thing he might want to do is commit to more work during the summer, especially if he continues to have back problems.  And if a guy like Donovan sucks with the Thunder, Stevens might get a chance to at least interview.  It would definitely help if they have to replace an assistant before the 2016 Olympics and Stevens gets the call.  That would definitely help set him up for the next run.

I would definitely love for Stevens to get the job.

After 18 months with their Bigs, the Littles were: 46% less likely to use illegal drugs, 27% less likely to use alcohol, 52% less likely to skip school, 37% less likely to skip a class
