’The Future Power Rankings are ESPN Insider's projection of the on-court success expected for each team in the 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons. Consider this a convenient way to see the direction in which your favorite team is headed. Each of the NBA's 30 teams received an overall Future Power Rating of 0 to 100 based on how well we expect each team to perform in the next three seasons. To rank the 30 teams, we asked ESPN Insider analysts Chad Ford and Kevin Pelton to rate each team in each category.

To determine the Future Power Rating, we rated each team in five categories: We determined that the most important category is a team's current roster and the future potential of those players -- that category accounts for 50 percent of each team's overall Future Power Rating.

At the same time, they looked at  management, ownership and coaching (17%), a team's spending habits and cap situation (17%), the reputation of the city and the franchise (8%), and what kind of draft picks they expect the team to have in the future (8%).

Cs ended up 24th in players, 3rd in management, 4th in cap, 14th in market, and 2nd in draft picks.

Other notable ratings were Sixers at 17th, though their players were ranked 28th, and the Nets who were ranked last overall, last in players, last in draft picks and 28th in management (ahead of FUBAR perennials SAC and MIN.)

Quote
Boston took the largest jump of any team in our rankings. The roster, while lacking a star, has rounded into a collection that appears much more capable than it did a year ago, when the Celtics ranked next to last in the player category, ahead of only the Lakers.

The Celtics' management score jumped up to third overall thanks in part to the brilliant coaching of Brad Stevens and the continued patience and shrewd asset collection of Danny Ainge -- the Celtics rank second overall in the draft category thanks to as many as five first-round picks in the next two years.

The team is also looking at massive cap room the next few years. So the Celtics are well-positioned to add stars via trade, free agency or the draft.

-- Chad Ford (Previous rank: 24)

Curious, whose in a better draft pick position than the C's?   And who is the better management (I'm guessing San Antonio #1, is GS #2?)?

Edit, I guess I should check out the links first, then I can answer my own questions.  Philly has the better picks, and yes San Antonio and GS are 1 and 2 for management.

After 18 months with their Bigs, the Littles were: 46% less likely to use illegal drugs, 27% less likely to use alcohol, 52% less likely to skip school, 37% less likely to skip a class

At first, I was like how the heck the Celtics are only 14th for market then read the description of what constitutes "market" and I guess it makes a little more sense.

Quote
MARKET (worth 8.3 percent of score): Appeal to future acquisitions based on team quality, franchise reputation, city's desirability as a destination, market size, taxes, business and entertainment opportunities, arena quality, fans

well that measuring stick is obviously off.  just based on fans alone, Boston is #1

Honestly it could really waver between 5 and 25 based on how all the draft picks coming down the pike over the next few years pan out, especially the Nets picks.

Pelton and Ford have the Nets dead last and I see nothing to reasonably contradict that assessment. As for ending up in the 20s that's very pessimistic given the competition.

You mean besides the fact that it's Pelton and Ford, right?

I think you misunderstood me.

When I said, "it could really waver between 5 and 25," what I was saying is that the Celts could be a top 5 "future rankings" team, or they could be toward the bottom.  Where those picks end up will make a huge difference in that regard.

Given the way they've structured the rankings, #10 seems right. Still, ranking the Nets dead last and knowing the Celtics basically have their pick for the next 3 seasons, gives me hope they'll outperform that ranking.

How are we 24th in players tied with Dallas? How are teams like OKC and LAC ahead of us by more than 15 in that category, given that it is future power rankings?

Because its only looking at 2 seaons beyond this one and Durant, Westbrook, Griffin, and Jordan are all young all stars. Throw in Paul (who has another 5 year in him, I'd say) and Ibaka (not quite and all star but really good and young also) and it makes sense to me.

Durant is a UFA after this year and Westbrook is a UFA after 2. Griffin has an early termination after 2. We made the playoffs with most of our team on rookie deals, and the last piece of the puzzle to becoming a playoff team was Isaiah Thomas, who will be around for 3 more years. Still don't understand why those teams are better than us in 2 years.

With Gerald Wallace no longer on board, I don't see how the Celtics can possibly be so highly rated in the category of rantings.
DKC Seventy-Sixers:

PG: G. Hill/D. Schroder
SG: C. Lee/B. Hield/T. Luwawu
SF:  Giannis/J. Lamb/M. Kuzminskas
PF:  E. Ilyasova/J. Jerebko/R. Christmas
C:    N. Vucevic/K. Olynyk/E. Davis/C. Jefferson

What you posted above is what I understood. I think the likelihood of the Cs varying from 5-15 is reasonable, but I don't see us falling back into the bottom 10 in any reasonable scenario. There are a lot very poorly owned/managed teams that eat up a bunch of the slots and will until they get new ownership. BKN, NYK, SAC, MIN, CHA, LAL, DEN, and PHX. CLE would be there too except Lebron wanted to go home. That doesn't leave many slots open in the bottom 10 and given our strong management, strong cap room, and picks, I can't see a scenario where we end up filling them.
