They say you need stars to contend, but boy are those teams with 2 and 3 stars vulnerable when one of the stars is injured (witness Cleveland last year in the playoffs, C's after KG went down in Feb 2009).  What will Chicago & Miami do when D Rose and D Wade go down again this year(for example)?  Yes C's don't have all-stars (yet), but on the bright side if someone goes down, its simply next man up (for the most part).  Being 11 deep (not even counting Young, Jones, & the rookies) probably really suits CBS's unselfish philosophy.  He doesn't even like to name captains - they are all captains/leaders.

It's a good recipe for regular season success. It matters less when the games matter more.
At least a goldfish with a Lincoln Log on its back goin' across your floor to your sock drawer has a miraculous connotation to it.

I totally agree with your sentiment come playoff time.... But picture a scenario where CBS plays 10 guys 24 minutes each.  The players could go all out every play knowing that they only had to play half the game.  In playoff games where the C's can keep it close (or even take the lead), the other coach is going to be pressured into keeping his (aging?) stars in the game (the premise being that our second unit is going to beat most other second units).  I'll bet we might be able to "steal" a playoff game or two by playing our 10 players against their 5 players.  I have laid out a very simplistic idea, but you get the point.

I think it was insurance against Sully coming to camp fat again, too.
