In fairness, he's losing over half of that to taxes, escrow, etc.  So he has maybe half a million to work with.  And as he notes, he can get an NYC apartment on that, but the cost is so ridiculous he just doesn't want to pay it.

tough to feel pity for someone making 1.3 mill a year playing a kid's game.  even if a good chunk of that is lost to paying taxes, agents and other non-negotiable/discretionary obligations, there's a lot of people in NYC/Brooklyn that have to get by on making much less money while working real jobs.

I don't know if anyone would feel pity for him after actually reading the article, though.

I don't think it's wrong for him to think like that. 8k vs 2-3k in rent is a big difference. Better than other rookies or even players who's been in the league for a while, blowing every paycheck

New York is expensive.  If you're not from the Northeast/DC, or San Francisco, it's easy to get sticker shock.  And to be honest, if you're traveling a lot anyway, and working most evenings when you're not, why pay 3-4 times the price to live in NY instead of New Jersey?

I don't think that the article is necessarily disparaging of him -- he seems to have a real appreciation for the ridiculous cost of housing in NYC.  It's that he's making a lot more money than most people for not really working and he's complaining and taking in roommates.

if he hates the cost of housing/living in NYC, maybe we can snag him when he hits free agency (if he turns out to be any good) ;D

I think in the area he is looking in NYC, the average income would probably be millions a year. I don't see him as complaining, but more of just describing the situation he is in.

Also having to live with roommates and complaining about the cost of rent is very much a thing to do in the trendier parts of New York when you're in the early bits of your 20's. At least since it's been cleaned up.

Yeah, no pity for the guy, just saying he doesn't have 1.33 million to work with, or particularly close to it.

If anything, despite the grumbling I think it speaks well of him.  Better to be frugal about housing than blowing his money trying to get the most badass place he possibly can like a lot of players do.  Save your money til the 2nd contract at least.

It sounds like he's being smart with his money, and doesn't want to spend $96k per year on housing.  He's considering moving into the city when the new Brooklyn practice facility is opened, though, because he doesn't enjoy the commute.

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
He could buy a place pretty easily. Bank would loan him whatever he needs within reason. Could get a nice apartment/townhouse for $1.5 to 2 million and get some growth rather than rent for 60-80k a year. His deal is guaranteed and he should stop Edited.  Profanity and masked profanity are against forum rules and may result in discipline.ing and buy.

Yeah this is what I was looking for. Seemed like it was taken a bit out of context. He isn't complaining about not making enough money, he's just stating the obvious fact that living in NYC is crazy expensive.
