Kobe will probably score more points if he can stay healthy, but who will have the better season overall? (Hint: there's a right answer and a wrong answer ;) )

Considering Kobe has barely played the last two seasons and is coming back from injury, I'm going with Pierce.

I voted Kobe because I think he will have a lot more opportunities with the Lakers than Pierce will have with the Clippers.
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

Kobe has a chance (if healthy) to put up the gaudy MVP numbers he did post Shaq, pre Gasol. However that team will still stink.

At worst, Pierce elevates an already playoff ready team further like he did in Washington. They won't win the West but they have more of my attention and maybe support now.
The Nets will finish with the worst record and the Celtics will end up with the 4th pick.

Pierce = I think Kobe will have another season of horrible defense and inefficient / ineffective offensive production. Pierce will be less dynamic but more consistently helpful to his team.

No question the Clippers will win more, but that wasn't the question, which is why I voted for Kobe.

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
I personally think Kobe is cooked.
Pierce is about winning and actually having a shot at a championship-his best shot since leaving the Celtics.

For Kobe it's about throwing up as many shots as he can to score 20 a night while his further age and injury scars continue to make him one of the worst defenders in the NBA. It's going to be sad when the Rockets play LA and Kobe gets destroyed by James Harden.

This will be the last chance for Pierce to win an NBA championship. And this will be his best chance since leaving us.
I loved the Clippers playoff effort last year...Blake took it to superstar level...I mean top 5 in the NBA... Speaking of I'll make a poll about that....
But with Doc coaching and now Pierce there I'm rooting for them.

Kobe's year and the Lakers year will be just sad. D Russell will stunt development and our Brooklyn pick lands top 10.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

Pierce. Kobe is no longer a relevant force in the NBA except in his own head.

I look for Kobe get 30-33 minutes playing time per game over the entire season. If he can put up 20-4-5 on anything above 40% shooting from the field that would be a successful season for him after the last couple of years.
Unless the Clippers have injury problems I believe Pierce's playing time will be somewhere in 20-24 minutes a night as they save his legs for the playoffs.
If he can put up 12 a game on 45% shooting from the field and shoot above 35% from 3 and not get abused on the defensive end that would be a success, ultimately they want his big game experience and steadying demeanour in the playoffs.
Considering the clippers won 56 games last season it will be hard for Pierce to up their win total much during the regular season, so I look for Kobe to have a bigger impact on any marked improvement in win totals of either team.

Kobe will put up much better stats...But Pierce will be huge for the Clippers in the playoffs.

I think the Lakers are content to let Kobe have his stats and get some more rookies and move on from him after this year.

Pierce.

He has a chance to have more meaningful moments.  Much like last year when he really showed up in the playoffs.

Kobe will have his chance to "hang stats" as the Lakers watch from the outside of the playoffs.

Anyone know where Kobe is at health wise? I never thought that PP was that far below Kobe even when both were in their prime. Really 2 great players.

Also, a great question.

I'll take Pierce based in part on the following fun fact:

In the 3-point era, 460 different players have averaged 22+ points per game in a season.

If you rank them all by WS48 Kobe's 2014-15 campaign ranks dead last.

He is similarly awful on other summary metrics like VORP. As awful as the Lakers were last year, they were actually far worse (by 5 points per 100 possessions) with Kobe on the court than with him off the court.

Basically if he plays a full season Kobe is on track to have one of the the worst high-volume, low-efficiency, poor-defending seasons in NBA history.

Pierce will be the exact opposite - a savvy vet who takes what the game gives him and contributes in all phases of the game. It's really no contest IMO.

Of course the Lakers were just downright awful last year all the way around.  Ed Davis and Tarik Black were the only two players on the team to have a FG% above 50%.

Hopefully, Paul Pierce will.

May his Clippers take the Lakers out back to the shed for whippings EVERY single time they play.

Beat them like it's June 17 2008 again, PP34!! ;D
