It kind of kills me to see 7 footers not be able to make it in the NBA. I like to think, "if only I was a fott taller, I'd be out there" when I watch the games, but there are so many examples of how that's just not true.

It's also interesting when guys that could play here choose not to. Remember Krstic? He wasn't great or even good really, but he had a few more years of being a legit NBA player. It boggles my mind how someone who could play in the NBA would choose not to. I wonder how much the language/cultural barriers get in the way.

They all have the dream to play in the NBA, but for some it isn't exactly what it is supposed to be, so when they get older they prefer to go back.
Take Gigi, for instance. He could make more money staying here, but the money he got from Fenerbahçe isn't so bad - 1.9 million per season - and there he has stability and playing time.

From what I could tell he didn't exactly pursue it. He signed with Fenerbahçe early in free agency and he had always hinted he prefered going back to Europe than staying here and almost not playing.
But if the Cs didn't have the roster crunch that they do, I'd see them offering him sth like 9M for 3 years. It's hard to imagine no other team from the 29 in the league would do sth similar.
That said, I agree his defense is lousy, so in the NBA he'd never be more than a shooter coming off the bench, as a spark plug.

I doubt we would have offered him a contract. I think his playing last year was due to 2 things, first we had a real lack of outside shooting and 2nd I think Ainge told Stevens to play him on the off chance he showed something and could turn into a minor asset we could trade. The second is just a guess.

I guess if you make it from your country to the NBA and you realize you are never going to be more than a marginal NBA player it could make sense to go home and be a star or elsewhere and make more money. The real thing is saying you played in the NBA, whats the difference between playing 1 meaningless season or 3?
