Especially at the number he signed, Amir Johnson must have drawn interest from several teams.

Who did we beat out? Dallas? Lakers? Sacramento? Indiana? He signed quick so he clearly knew which team he was looking for but which other teams that would have drawn his eye?

Don't know what other teams wanted him, but I bet we were willing to pay more to get a 2 year deal with the 2nd not guaranteed. I think thats why he signed quickly. But its a good move for us too. Another asset to trade if we want and we had the money to spend and Ainge correctly realized there was no one better to get. Hopefully he plays up to his contract and we can keep for 2 years.

For me the phrase "expressed interest" doesn't mean lots. "Extended an offer" means a little more

well obviously but the deal happened pretty quickly -- probably quicker than those teams were looking to extend an offer.  doesn't mean some wouldn't have had he been on the market a bit longer -- like a week

Okay, and how often do you hear about extended offers to mid level free agents that arent restricted?

Showing interest can be anything from a phone call to touch base or discussing salary figures.

Well the Spurs probably would have had him in mind as a David West fall back option. So ya a lot of those interested teams probably needed things to shake out first before actually determining their level of interest.

The main reason I brought up this question was to identify the type of FA that would choose Boston over the big cities.

Johnson is an older workman like contributor that played here a lot saw the crowd during the good times and the bad. Maybe we should try to identify those types when looking the next FA.

I bet he got offers for a lot less money with more years. In his head, he probably thinks he'll earn the second year with strong play. Even if he doesn't, year at 12 million and then still likely being able to get 6-8 million on the open market is better than taking a long term deal starting at 6-8 million.

Given that Amir committed earlier in free agency, I'd think he was much more of an Aldridge fallback than a West fall back.  Most of those teams mentioned, except for the Pacers, were after one or both of Aldridge and Jordan.  Based on the timing of Amir's decision, I'm guessing he was the Celtics' plan B after Love re-upped in Cleveland (within 30 minutes of Love being announced, Johnson was a Celtic).  Celtics paid a little extra in year 1 to get the non-guaranteed second year, and to lock him up before some team making a max offer to a big struck out and went looking to spend it elsewhere.

Care not. He's our next Crowder, but maybe with more offensive firepower. Every one is going to love him in a couple of months.

Absolutely, the Celtics drastically improved their front court this offseason, fans will love the intensity that Amir brings and the scoring/rebounding that Lee brings.  If Sully enters this year with a lot to prove this team could be scary good down low.  All this competition will bring out the best in everyone.

Yeah, you hit the nail on the head. Also, the cap is going up. As long as he doesn't get hurt (knock on wood) it's a win-win

I still don't get why this fallacy continues to live on.

Did Aldridge go to a big city? no.
Did Monroe go to a big city? no.

The 3 biggest factors in drawing free agents are:
1. Money
2. A chance to complete
3. A chance for more playing time
