The Boston Celtics have reached a deal to bring former Alabama wing Levi Randolph to training camp, according to Sportando.

The 6-foot-5, 210-pounder averaged 15.4 points and 5.1 rebounds in college last season, shooting 48.1 percent from the field, 34.8 percent from behind the arc and 83.9 percent from the free throw line. After going undrafted, he had a decent summer league showing for Oklahoma City (8.4 points per game) before receiving spare playing time in Las Vegas for the Utah Jazz.

According to Al.com, Randolph turned down multiple offers from overseas teams to accept the Celtics training camp invitation. Because Boston will already have 16 players on guaranteed contracts once all offseason moves are finalized, Randolph will presumably have minimal chance to make the club. He could end up with the Maine Red Claws, though. The Celtics typically bring in several players to training camp with the hope that at least some of them will end up with the team's D-League affiliate.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

Dude drives like James Harden.

Anyone know anything about him? Based on just those numbers and highlights I'm wondering why he wouldn't get drafted. If he's really 6'5" that's pretty good size. Seems like a good skill set with apparently pretty good results in college. Low competition level or what?

Guess I don't see it at all.

Either way, not a bad pickup to see what he's got. But I'm not impressed. We kind of need someone taller than 6'5, and I'm pretty impressed with Holmes, so here's hoping he at least gets a training camp invite.

We've actually got too many tall guys who play in the frontcourt right now. Holmes may have hope of getting some guaranteed money from someone before committing to training camp.

He's listed as a 2 guard in both draftexpress and nbadraft.net.

The obvious knocks that will come his way:

1. too old (will be 23 when season starts) so therefore no room to grow/upside

2. not an elite athlete and doesn't have elite physical metrics.

Regarding  #1: I know many are down on selecting seniors for their lack of upside. This kid has improved every year at 'Bama. He has played in the SEC for four years, so his competition has been decent.

Also, perhaps this kid stayed in school to actually get an education. He won numerous national and SEC scholar athlete awards while at 'Bama.

Here's an interesting capsule of his senior year accomplishments on the Tide website:

Quote
Selected as a Capital One Second Team Academic All-American becoming the first Alabama men?s basketball player to receive the honor ? was the first player in program history to be named to the CoSIDA/Capital One First Team Academic All-District Team in three consecutive years ? named the 2015 SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year and second team All-SEC ? leaves Alabama with the most games played in a career (135) and his 120 starts are fifth-most all-time ? never missed a game in four years at the Capstone and started every game in 2014-15 ? finished his career with 1,336 points, good for 21st on the all-time list ? chosen as SEC Player of the Week on Nov. 23 after scoring 23 points against Southern Miss (11/20) and 19 against Western Carolina (11/17) ? led the team in scoring at a 15.4 ppg clip and set a season high with 32 points on senior night against Ole Miss (3/3) ? recorded double-digits in points a team-best 31 times only failing to do so in three games ? led the team in scoring 14 times, in assists 15 times and in steals 16 times, the most on the team in each category ? led the team with five 20-plus point performances ? set the school record for most free throws made without a miss in a single game, going 17-for-17 against Ole Miss (3/3), the most by an Alabama player in a single game since Paul Ellis hit a record 18 against Ole Miss in 1972 ? led the team with 2.5 assists, 1.4 steals and 35.3 minutes per game ? was second on the team with 5.1 rebounds per game ? recorded his first career double-double with 15 points and a career-high 10 rebounds in the season opener against Towson (11/14) ? led the team with 20 points and seven rebounds in the NIT opener against Illinois (3/17) ? scored 17 points while grabbing seven rebounds and four steals in the final game of his career at Miami (3/21).

Regarding #2: His physical metrics may not be elite, but they are far from shabby, especially for a two guard. He's 6'4.75" without shoes, making him 6'5" or 6'6" with shoes. Weighs 200, has a 6'9.5" wingspan, an 8'5" standing reach but only a 31.5 no-step vertical. Obviously not an explosive athlete, but the kid can finish.

No risk with some reward potential. I'm looking forward to seeing him try to make the team. That would mean more assets for trade.

You could make the argument that Randolph is far more redundant than Holmes, since Holmes can play SF/PF. I would rather slot Young/Hunter at SG/SF and see what they can do at that position rather than bring in an unknown who's going to eat up minutes for our rookies.

Wow, this guy wasn't drafted?  I like what I see.  I wish his defense was included in the video.

Maybe he prefers D-league to Europe, many players do, thinking it gives them more exposure to NBA teams.

Yeah he is 6' 4" and 3/4 with almost a 6'10" wingspan 31.5" no step vertical which is good.
