The best American player to play in the NBL before going on to NBA success was Stephen Jackson, who was a second-round pick, waived before the season started, and played around the world for three years (including a short stint with the Sydney Kings) before making it to the NBA.

The best American currently in the NBL seems to be Josh Childress.

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
Wow...Thornton is an absolute athletic freak, and Australian players are severely lacking in athleticism.

If Thornton goes to the NBA, he's going to absolutely dominate.  I'm talking basketball GOD status haha

P.s.
Yes, I live in Australia.

me too, where do you live? I just moved to Adelaide from Melbourne.

Read that last line again. One more time.

So the good news is that Thornton should dominate the NBL (Australian league).  The bad news is that if he doesn't dominate the NBL... we should be worried.

you guys vastly underestimate Marcus.  He works as hard or harder than anyone else, is very athletic, and I have seen him light up quite a few mid-major teams.  He can pour it in from 3.  Not saying he is an NBA future star, but it's almost as if you guys think he is a joke.  Scoring 2000+ pts in college is not a joke.

I would have preferred if he went to Europe.
I wonder if it was a personal choice to go to Australia.

I will admit I knew nothing of him prior to summer league. I just went and looked at their last year's schedule and honestly they play "nobody" so if you're the main gunner in a conference of low-level competition the 2000+ pts doesn't hold a lot of credibility. I don't mean to demean him but seriously. He looked AWFUL in summer league with the one-game exception. I don't really see him as ever making it in the NBA. He plays smaller than his size, he doesn't do much other than jack up shots. Maybe Australia is good for him.

I think people are more saying that the NBL is a joke, not that Thornton is a joke, but it seems like they are trying to raise the profile of their league and Thornton might be part of the beginning of a trend that creates a viable option for those who want to play in an English-speaking country.

Additionally, it sounds like part of the plan is to come back and play in the D-League after Australia's season ends in February.  That isn't as easy to do if he goes to Europe.

hodgy, just want to point out a couple of his lines

They played University of Richmond, which was a decent A-10 team that went to the NIT Quarterfinals..they make the NCAA field many years.   Marcus' line  FG: 14-18, 3pters: 8-11, FT: 1-2, 38 pts.

Like I said, he is a good player.  Maybe not NBA starter material, but he can be a backup ala Nate Robinson, and come in and score for you.

I hope he can do it...by the way, I am an old William and Mary alum, so let me dream a little lol

I am not sure if anyone has put up this article

http://espn.go.com/blog/boston/celtics/post/_/id/4719962/why-thornton-might-head-down-under

There was a link to an interview with Josh Smith about his experiences in Australia.  He indicated that they have a 14 second shot clock...wow!
