He can shoot it, but when he goes to the rim it's ugly. If there is someone there to give him body contact at the rim the things happen.
He misses, he gets knocked to the ground, his ego gets bruised.
I think he needs to learn to pump fake. But more than that he needs a floater, and he needs to stop short of the rim, because when he goes all the way to the hoop it ends badly.
Any other ideas for the kid to score when he gets but his man.

So you're saying he needs some lessons from KO?

He tends to drive to the right and then goes up with the left right into the defender and he is too weak to get the shot off or follow through and at least get a foul. He played better today but still missed a wide open 3 with nobody within 20 feet - Hunter wouldn't have missed that.
indeed, one of the well known weaknesses of young is his inability to drive to his right. he always goes to the left.

Hey, Smart says he's gonna learn to go to his left much better after having his right-hand fingers bandaged up as they are--so why not wrap up Young's left hand for the remainder of the summer?

We would need to injure that left hand first, though. Ya know... just to maintain reliability.

It's just a ridiculous thing.

Ideas to help him finish near the rim?

This is the NBA. If he seems like he cannot finish, then he cannot finish. Almost 100% of the time players wont improve that type of aspect of the game , and when they do its usually improving the 3 point shot, and that comes a little later.

Well then I guess you solved the case. He cannot finish at the rim so therefore he never will. He is very inconsistent at shooting the 3 even when he is all alone. I guess he never will. Then according to your rules he has to go because he will never improve into an NBA player.

You don't get it.

The majority of people don't get it in here. Maybe they are just 13 years old and have fun making new ways to discuss basketball.

I'm not high on his potential, but he is still only 19... far from a finished product.

He has disappointed me this summer league. He was the player I wanted to watch most. But he is too good for D League and not giving us a reason to play him heavy minutes as of now. Best should be to hold onto him and give him chances or insert him in the game.

I think the risk-reward is better if we hold him.

ding ding ding we have a winner.

He needs to improve his handle. Right now on the perimeter he is a one dribble then two steps to the hoop type guy. If he could use his dribble to get closer to the hoop before he takes his steps he would have more lift and get closer to the hoop. Right now he is driving and then throwing up a lefty hook/floater.

When you are using your layup steps to go to the hoop from the 3 point line off one dribble you are taking long strides which are less conducive to jumping high. Improving his handle would allow him to take shorter strides and get up higher when he is closer to the rim.

See that, great job Evan. You actually gave an interesting coaching point. Not like the other kid that just whines that he can't finish and that's it.
Fact is that he has the tools he's just stupid or something. TP Evan for bringing it to the table.
