I've heard the argument over and over that a top pick is worth more than many late picks. Agreed. But unless we get really lucky with someone elses pick get very unlucky with injuries, we are not looking at getting a top pick any time soon. Last year we got pretty discouraged when we learned our offer for Love was not the best offer. This draft we couldn't bully our way up the order with a lot of mid picks.
Some will say, the plan doesn't work and Ainge is terrible blah blah blah. I say, we just need to give it more time. Keep stockpiling assets. If 6 mid first round picks isn't enough, out 10 be? We can get more and here is how:
We just can't lose assets. So we have to look at guys who could walk next year and guys who hit RFA. Ainge has to see if they have realistic salary expectations and if they would be a good fit. If not, they need to be traded. Turner is up next year and Zeller and Sully it RFA. To early to tell with Johnson and Lee.
My guess is that Ainge decides to keep Zeller long term and trades Sully and Turner. Hopefully they could each get us a future pick with some chance of being good. So that's 2 more picks. We can probably also help other teams make trades and pick up some late 1sts, seconds or improve some of the picks we already have.
The point of it all is that we are stuck waiting for the next star to come along. We have no control over the timing. But we can keep cycling assets and improving our record and potential trade package year by year until we get get a star. Hopefully soon.
