And the good news is that some of the high-profile FAs this year seem to be swayed more by similar factors as opposed to just going to NY or LA.

I think we'll need Smart to really have a breakout season, or for one of the other younger guys to show something more than we've seen, to have that happen.

What we saw this summer is that stars care about location, but they care even more about having good teammates who already know how to win.

We need to really impress. One of the following would be ideal: win a playoff series, CBS wins Coach of the Year, or Smart is All-Defense/All-Star/Most Improved Player (some sort of recognition). I think accomplishing one of these gets us meetings and maybe legitimate consideration from the top guys.

This would be the best case scenario:

1. The youngsters improve and the C's make good run in the playoffs (either making the 2nd round or just winning 2-3 games in the first round against a quality opponent) wherein Marcus Smart establishes himself as a PG players want to play with.

2. Brooklyn is awful and we wind up with a top 3 draft choice, which lands us a star.

3. Over the course of the season, an established player starts looking for an out, either through a trade or FA and sees that this young team, about to add a young star, as a good place to come and complete a sort-of-big-3 with Smart and this draft pick.

Then we make a run at the Finals in 2017. Best case scenario.

Just thought you guys would find this interesting. At $64 million under the cap, it's hard to imagine we'll even hit the floor of about $80 million. I have to assume we're going to try and take in some long-term money at the deadline, because we almost have too much cap space. At least the trade deadline/summer of 2016 should be filled with fireworks...
Also isn't the free agent class next year a little weak after you get past Durant and John Wall?

John Wall is a free agent next year?

I think he's already signed an extension.

Does it matter if no one wants to come here, Ainge has to build some more and we need some young guys to step it up.
Boom!! I agree..might have all the cap space but doesn't help if no one wants to play in Boston
C/PF-Horford, Baynes, Noel, Theis, Morris,
SF/SG- Tatum, Brown, Hayward, Smart, Semi, Clark
PG- Irving, Rozier, Larkin

And a great coach and organization. LMA chose the Spurs for those reasons and for the fact that Duncan is still going strong at his age, and he wants to play for an organization that nows how to give him the best chance at playing well for so many years himself.

The problem is that we could be looking at $55 million under the FLOOR. We have to add a ton of salary.

You don't have to add salary.  If you are under the floor, you just get charged the difference and the money gets distributed to the players on your roster.

They all will resign with theri current teams. Washngton has a shot at Durant. Our  best case Scenario is for the Kngs to emplode this year and we get Cousins. I don't see any other big FA coming here for less at the momenet. We do have the Hope that our coach can show FA this is the place to play.

I think we are going to need to look at the trade market.

I'm aware. I don't think ownership I'd going to want to divvy up $55 million between its players and get nothing in return.

I'm more and more convinced Danny's strategy is to over-achieve again next year (45-50 wins, 2nd round of playoffs), establish that Smart is a good #3 option, then clear the decks in the summer and try to get a pair of stars to buy into the organization - great young coach, smart GM, winning tradition.

He'll have all the salary flexibility in the world, a few mildly attractive young players, some S&T options, and some draft picks that could be pretty good (10-15 range).

Who knows whether it'll work, but I don't see any better options at this point. And the good news is that some of the high-profile FAs this year seem to be swayed more by similar factors as opposed to just going to NY or LA.

This...and the fact that the team has a bunch of 1st round picks (some of which might be in the lottery).  It gives him the flexibility in a number of areas.
