We're Going to Have a lot of Cap Space

Just thought you guys would find this interesting. At $64 million under the cap, it's hard to imagine we'll even hit the floor of about $80 million. I have to assume we're going to try and take in some long-term money at the deadline, because we almost have too much cap space. At least the trade deadline/summer of 2016 should be filled with fireworks...

Also isn't the free agent class next year a little weak after you get past Durant and John Wall?

I don't think it's particularly great after Durant. I'm not sure, but I think Wall signed his extension already.

The problem is that we could be looking at $55 million under the FLOOR. We have to add a ton of salary.

It really depends on how this season goes. I think its imperative to get one guy now that will attract a guy like Durant or Beal to want to come here.
We could have all the money in the world but we need to become a more desirable location for big names.

The biggest fear right now is having all of this money and overspending on scrubs because we have it. Next years free agency could get scary fast.

If the Celtics want to lure good FA's they're going to have to be an attractive option. I think Brad Stevens can be part of that but I also think the team has to be good enough for a player to think they can win here. That means different things to different people (Greg Monroe thinks he can win in Milwaukee) but this team is going to have to improve to get players we actually want on the team.

We're going to be forced to add some guys we don't need -- not unlike this summer -- just to make use of that cap space.

Unless Danny trades for a major piece between now and next summer, we won't be attracting any big names guys (and it sounds like there aren't many of them next summer anyway).

I'm more and more convinced Danny's strategy is to over-achieve again next year (45-50 wins, 2nd round of playoffs), establish that Smart is a good #3 option, then clear the decks in the summer and try to get a pair of stars to buy into the organization - great young coach, smart GM, winning tradition.

He'll have all the salary flexibility in the world, a few mildly attractive young players, some S&T options, and some draft picks that could be pretty good (10-15 range).

Who knows whether it'll work, but I don't see any better options at this point. And the good news is that some of the high-profile FAs this year seem to be swayed more by similar factors as opposed to just going to NY or LA.
