My case against the addition by subtraction arguement:

Deron Williams missed about a month last season (1/5-2/1)

During that period the Nets went 2-11.

For a comparison here is the nets record in the 13 games before and after D-Will missing time:

13 games before: 8-5
13 games after: 7-6

They’ll be improved in other areas (RHJ and TRob will at least make them more athletic).

But they will go into to the season having lost D-Will, Plumlee, Alan Anderson and Mirza Teletovic. So it’s hard to see them making the playoffs even if Brook Lopez stays healthy all year.

I understand why posters here might worry that the nets might be better next year without deron. Last year that was obviously the case after we moved rondo. But realize that was mostly the case because we had Smart and Thomas to replace him. In 2013-2014, when we didn't have anyone to fill those shoes we were a lottery team and ended up with the 6th worse record. We weren't just automatically a playoff team because rondo was off the floor. There needs to be a replacement in place.

The nets have Jack, Larkin, Blake and Boatright as their ball handlers. Their paper thin in the back court.

Yeah, just remembered Blake was part of that draft night deal for the Nets.

Like I said, need to see what the terms of the buyout are. How desperate was Williams to leave? His new contract with DAL also offsets that cap hit for the Nets.

Blake is 35 years old and would probably prefer to be a third string point guard for a contender in the final season or two of his career. Would be surprised if he stays there. There are no point guard options left on the market worth anything. They probably lost there best shot at a stop gap backup in lin yesterday.

easily the most interesting part here is what the cap ramifications end up being to Brooklyn once this is complete.  he'll def be on the books against their cap this year but will there be some residual affect for the remainder of what his deal would have been as well?  because if there is......wow does that bode VERY WELL for us

Somehow people are more optimistic with this lineup.

Jack/???
---
Bogdonavic:????
Thad Young/???
Lopez/ ???

Over

Smart/ Isiah/ Rozier
Bradley/ RJ Hunter
Crowder/ Turner/ Young
Sully/ Kelly
Johnson/Zeller

If we are a 7-8th seed..: nets are top 3 pick.

Reports were he's getting $25-$30 million of the $43 million he's owed.  Won't really help the Nets out this year.  Next year it might give them more flexibility.  Depends of Lopez stays healthy enough to be a lure.  I think it's the right thing for the Nets -- take their medicine for a year, clear the books, and try again next year.

Just saw that it's $27.5 mil. I wonder if there's an option to spread that over five years, or they simply stay with the two years.

Money from DAL lessens that cap hit each year by $5 mil. So it looks like the Nets may have slashed around $13 mil or so off this year's cap situation?

Boy, this pick now has some serious potential. Hell, we ought to try and facilitate that JJ to Cleveland deal now. I'd rather have one excellent pick from Brooklyn than 3 so-so ones!

The cap implications are really what I'm interested in now. As it stands, the Nets are going to be quite bad this year (and won't have any possibility of really upgrading the team), so the 2016 pick is probably going to be a very good one (possibly incredible if they end up trading Johnson to the Cavs, which seems likely, given the ownership's interest in cutting payroll). The question is, what happens next year and the year after. If the Nets still have to carry his contract (or at least a large part of it) on their cap, their moves are going to be somewhat limited. Yes, Johnson is off the books after this year, but the team has pretty minimal upside to sell max contract players on. If the Knicks and Lakers were unable to get anybody good this year, I highly doubt the Nets are going to succeed in 2016, either. So, I think the chances of a quick Nets turnaround are very low, meaning the 2017 and 2018 picks might still be good/very good.

This pick could be really really good.

Someone posted this on the Blog's post about DWill:

It is reported to be stretched over 5 seasons so the cap hit each season is only 5.5mil.  The Nets are apparently under the luxury tax now.

For those who are hoping for JJ to get traded, it won't happen. The reason why they waived Williams was so that they didn't have to trade Johnson so they could get under the tax. Johnson was the only one of the two who actually had some trade value.

Not that it matters. JJ is going on 35 and is on the decline. JJ or no JJ, the Nets are a Lopez injury from giving the Celtics a top 10 pick.

a lineup of :

C--Jordan
PF-Dirk
SF-Parsons
SG-Matthews
PG-Deron W

Would be very good if Jordan didn't go back to the Clips
C/PF-Horford, Baynes, Noel, Theis, Morris,
SF/SG- Tatum, Brown, Hayward, Smart, Semi, Clark
PG- Irving, Rozier, Larkin

The Nets are going to be real bad the next two seasons. What a heist by Ainge, I says it's probable the C's get a top 8 pick, with a outside shot at top 3 if things break their way. The 17 draft will be special. Giles, Smith, Thon and Tatum etc...It's a loaded class.

Wow. So with DAL paying Williams $5 mil for each of the next two seasons, the Nets basically erased that deal from their books for this year and next.

$43 mil just vanished off the Nets books.

NASTY! The ball handling and athleticism is insane when you consider he's a 6-10/230 PF.
