This is fantastic news for us. Dallas is now looks like a late lottery team (We'd get there pick) And the Nets are now that much worse. (We get their pick)

How so? I'd rather have Williams sulk in Brooklyn than play free and loose with the Mavs.

Brooklyn = addition by subtraction. Dallas = got a motivated player going someplace that wants him.

Derain is constantly injured, they were better off with Rondo. This doesn't move the needle for Dallas at all.

Everything that I've read points to the Nets' ownership being cheifly concerned with getting under the cap to avoid paying the ridiculous tax bills they've had to pay these last two seasons. If that's their first concern, we might be in nice shape.

To an extent, yes. The problem is that their PG is now Jarret Jack. That's a really bad situation to be in. Long-term it's a good move for the Nets, but as of right now, their team is worse. Nets fans in the comment section of Nets Daily are convinced that they're giving us no worse than a top 10 pick this year.

I'll need to see the terms of the buyout. But it's possible the Nets could now have the MLE to use on a replacement PG, and with the cap spike next year, they could have a lot more room to play with.

I've always maintained that the fiscal straightjackets posed by Deron and Joe Johnson were going to keep the Nets mired in mediocrity with no real options to improve their roster. Looks like they now have breathing room.

Edit: Nets also have Steve Blake. A Jack/Blake platoon with the offense running through Joe J is not a bad situation to be in. Lopez and Thad Young. RHJ and BojBog taking care of the rest of the minutes in the wing rotation. Health and depth will be a concern, but I don't rule Brooklyn out of competing for a bottom playoff tier just yet.

Hard to see them getting a better PG than Steve Blake with MLE. Doesn't seem like there is much talent in that price bracket in this year's point guard FA class. Blake was pretty solid for Portland last year.

I think Lionel Hollins will really like working with Steve Blake. His type of PG. Cares more about the team than himself. Priority is executing the offense and getting people involved. Rather than calling his own number. Spending too much time on the ball.

I think the fit there between S.Blake and Hollins is really good.

That doesn't worry me much. NY and LA, in major markets and armed with Kobe and Melo and top 5 draft picks, struggled to gain interest from players. And that was few teams having cap space. I really doubt Brook Lopez is going to be a strong selling point and land FA's when almost everyone will have cap room.

The Nets have become a Brook Lopez injury away from giving us a top 5 pick.

I am not sure how I feel about this in terms of the draft pick Dallas owes us.

I agree that Dwill has been on a downward trend for a number of years.  It doesn't seem likely that he will move the needle much in dallas.  But a change of location might be good for him and maybe his game fits better with Dallas.  If he stays healthy and can get back to being a productive player this could improve their team and worsen our pick.

Yeah, just remembered Blake was part of that draft night deal for the Nets.

Like I said, need to see what the terms of the buyout are. How desperate was Williams to leave? His new contract with DAL also offsets that cap hit for the Nets.

I'm assuming that Williams will be motivated.  Nobody can assume he'll be healthy.  I don't know how much this impacts them.  If they get 60 good games out of him and 75-80  out of Nowitzki and Parsons they'll be fighting for an 8 seed.

Deron Williams looks cooked as a player. He's been spiraling downward for the past several seasons. His Per averages for the point guard position last year were 25th for point guards in the league. When Pierce and Garnett were in Brooklyn, his Per averages were ranked 14th amongst NBA point guards.

Kind of excited to see what Deron Williams shows up in Dallas.

I'd love to see his game get back to a good place. I don't think he'll ever be what he was in Utah but even if Deron could be what he was 2 years ago ... that would be great.

Not optimistic about this though. Still, a little glimmer of hope.

Reports were he's getting $25-$30 million of the $43 million he's owed.  Won't really help the Nets out this year.  Next year it might give them more flexibility.  Depends of Lopez stays healthy enough to be a lure.  I think it's the right thing for the Nets -- take their medicine for a year, clear the books, and try again next year.
