If you don't think Lee makes us worse defensively I would suggest you actually watch David Lee play basketball.  :)

I can't, he hasn't come off the bench in years

Ayyyyy

I like how one opinion can be conflated to "everyone"/"the fanbase"  ::)

David Lee sucks. Has nothing to do with Wallace, IMO, beyond the fact that I'd rather cheer for Wallace as our best cheerleader than Lee as our best player.

Sucks at what ?

Because it surely isn't basketball

Acquiring David Lee:

- Makes the team worse defensively, somehow
- Means a starting spot will probably be used on a 30+ guy with no future here
- Makes the team more likely to finish in the middle of the pack
- Means we have to watch David Lee for at least 20 minutes a night 75+ times

David Lee on the Celts is basically a redux of Kris Humphries, without any of the easy Kardashian jokes.

It's comical you think this move was done for basketball purposes. Even though Lee is currently the superior players on the court out of the two, ainge turned Wallaces 10 mill expiring into a 15.4 million expiring in David lee.

He most likely won't even be here for the 75 games you are whining about and will be flipped at the deadline like Thornton was last year.

But wah shouldve kept Wallace and his 5 million dollar less expiring.....right....

David Lee undoubtedly helps our record improve through 30-50 games, and then we flip him to a contender who needs frontcourt depth for the playoff push.

Likely we get a late 1st back, or a young piece like Crowder. When we have a +.500 record, and flip Lee for something useful, hard to imagine people will be pining for Wallace then.

Debbie downer much? If Ainge managed to swap washed-up gerald wallace for a guy who's good enough to actually start for us, isn't that a win?
I think the biggest thing is that having a veteran start for us for a year is completely worthless to the rebuild, and possibly detrimental. Now our two biggest moves this offseason were to get two of those, and teams once again know that we have to make a desperate attempt to trade them to get any value out of them.

As someone who, given the current alternatives, would have preferred a tanking strategy for this year, I still see potential positives to the Lee trade that weren't there with Wallace:

  • Better ability to flip the player, as a player, for an asset during the season.
  • Better record: if they'd already decided that tanking wasn't going to happen, we might as well enjoy the basketball.
  • Along with a better record, it's a better chance to beat Brooklyn and 'improve' that draft pick.

You're not wrong: insofar as Lee's primary value is an expiring contract, but I would be very surprised if he doesn't see the floor for a majority of the available minutes while he is on the Celtics, which will lead to the scenario Pho is describing.

Here's the thing:

Optimists around here like to talk about how young our team is.  How the team is succeeding despite having all of these young guys with a bright future.

Yet, we're currently on track to give significant minutes and major roles to Isaiah Thomas, Avery Bradley, Evan Turner, David Lee, and Amir Johnson.

A veritable parade of guys who are what they are and whose main value to the team is that they might fetch some value in a trade.

If this sounds familiar, it's basically the same spot the team was in heading into last season.  So we've gone through a full year of rebuild and the team is, if anything, more cluttered with "assets" and we can't even place our hopes on a top 10 picking coming our way.

The saving grace of a rebuilding team is typically that there are a handful of young guys who occasionally flash the potential to turn into something special, guys you can grow attached to and imagine as the future of the franchise.  Failing that, you can at least pine away for the latest college superstar in the draft.

No such luck here.

Lee averaged 18.2 points and 9.3 rebounds per game on 52.3-percent shooting in the 2013-14 season and then got hurt . Now all of a sudden he is suppose to suck? I don't get it.

This now serves to perfectly symbolize the interior defense as well as the roster building strategy.

No way man our team is so good dude they're gonna be stars we just gotta let 'em develop why do you hate the Celtics you evil man you.

His offense is mitigated by his defense, and his numbers are empty. He has consistently struggled to find playing time on a championship-caliber team, and he has never been the primary player on a winning team.

If you want more evidence of his greatness, look at his tenure with the Knicks. Contrast that with their win-loss ratio.

Basically, instead of moving on from Brandon Bass type veterans, we've now decided to field entire 5 man lineups comprised of guys like that.

If you need help understanding the "David Lee sucks" thing, go take a look at how the Red Sox are doing with Hanley Ramirez in left field.
