How did Danny get Amir (1yr - $12MM) and Jonas (1yr - $5MM) to reportedly agree to such team friendly contracts? Let's discuss.
Amir Johnson was signed for 2yr - $24MM (1-year guarantee call it 1yr - $12MM).
Good player that signed questionably quick in the FA process while there are many good bigs available for much cheaper. Jonas was signed for 2yr - $10MM (1-year guarantee call it 1yr - $5MM).
OK... how? why?
Danny obviously sees higher value in Amir. He found his target and closed. My take is that a standard fully guaranteed 2yr contract would have put Amir at 2yr - $16MM (opinions will vary). I don't believe Danny is worried about Amir's health or I don't think he would have targeted him so aggressively. My take is that Danny approached Amir with a price point ($12MM per) that was above what Amir expected and with that the negotiation was on the 2nd year non-guaranteed. Instead of being tied to Amir in '16-'17 season, he overpays for year 1. This in turn took away all cap space, but with a roster of solid role players, Danny didn't value adding additional small deals.
With Jonas, I believe his price point is market value and Danny worked his agent into a bad contract by not guaranteeing the second year. The biggest reason Jonas is here is because Jonas wanted to be here (thank you Brad Stevens). With the money being thrown around, Jonas should have received at least 2yr - $10MM guaranteed somewhere IMO.
Now these non-guaranteed contracts... they obviously provide flexibility next year with cap savings if they choose to cut the players. My question is on the specifics of the non-guaranteed contract. What is the timeline for when they become guaranteed? Does it leave us in an extremely friendly position like the Cavs are in right now with Haywood? Did Danny's signings provide us with blue chips even if both players suck next year? That would be the Danny Magic working at it's best.
