This could be the new team mascot.  Reflects the character of the team pretty well.

News that Amir Johnson and Jerebko were signed today for big money was met with outrage given the numbers, but then we found out that they're only guaranteed for a single year.

Add to that the bloated, discombobulated state of the depth chart and it's plain to see -- we are no closer to having a sense of what this team will look like long term than we were a month ago.  That's frustrating.

Often the one saving grace of a young, non-contending team is that there are guys you can get to know over time.  You can appreciate the way that the team grows together, and imagine what they might become.  That saving grace isn't in play for the Celtics.

Danny is probably making the best of a limited set of not so great options.  I wasn't expecting "FIREWORKS!", though it's annoying that the team seems to continue leaking stuff to the media to appease fans, from the plan to move up in the draft to the desire to chase big name free agents.

Still, if I hoped for anything this off-season, it was some more clarity and focus.  Doesn't look like we're gonna get that.

Great Post. TP.

I have felt that I do not know the longterm plan of this team since we traded PP and KG. What are we doing? Making a fun team that gets bounced in the playoffs every year or creating a champion? I want the latter, but many people on here just want some entertainment and would choose to be a playoff team.
I mean jeez we don't even have an all star on the team. How are we suppose to add onto something that has no core.

I understand Danny's idea of accumulating assets and being prepared for whenever a good deal comes along, but how long is a fair amount of time for fans to wait? I'm trying to be patient with the process, but I'm starting to wonder if it would be better to not sign vets like Jerebko and just play the guys we've drafted the last few years, and see what happens. Those small-time vets aren't likely to attract big-name FAs, and they might cost us a few spots in the draft. Otherwise, the treadmill and revolving-door metaphors look more likely, and those options aren't attractive.

Do you think he's afraid to be in the lotto again? Maybe he thinks if we are in the lotto the Celts will lose the fans that started watching our playoff push. If thats true someone needs to tell him being a leader means making the unpopular choices and seldom do you have good PR.

No I think management doesn't want to run off CBS.

According to this thread that's exactly what he's doing.  No Lotto for you.

I think ownership would really prefer not to engineer things downward if they can put a potential playoff team on the floor.

I also think Danny has a great deal of faith in his own ability to make moves in the future to change the trajectory of the team so long as he continues to build up his assets, no matter what those assets are.

Meanwhile, we've got a team that's better and more satisfying than Philadelphia's in the sense that they can plausibly finish this season at or above .500.  But it's just as much of a mess with no clear vision of a long term plan in place yet.

Except we probably aren't better than Philadelphia in the long term and they have quality bigs that they could trade for win-now players

I think this is the bottom line. Brad Stevens is good enough that we'd have to undermine him to a ridiculous degree to actually pull off a Philly-level tank and he won't stand for that. We can't let our biggest asset walk.

The best alternative is exactly what Danny is doing: putting together a decent team on the floor while staying flexible, hoarding assets, and hoping we get lucky.

help with the math here pho. ainge promised at a 5 year rebuild to everyone. so far two seasons have passed and the third is about to open. does that add up to 5?

year 1 is all about tearing things down. the celtics get into the playoffs in year 2 of the rebuild. let's see what he can do in year 3 shall we?

Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.
