Seeing as though we have like 9 guards I wanted to see in hindsight if you wish we had taking one of the highly touted Bigs last year.

No.  Always draft the best player available.  Smart is better than both, IMO.

Ainge went best available this year as well.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
No way - while we are loaded with guards, we also are loaded with PFs. I don't know if there is a gm out there who would choose Vonleh or Randle over Smart at this point. I am definitely happy with Smart as a player or asset.

Nah.  I still think Randle will end up being something along the lines of Carl Landry / David Lee.  Tough to find time for that kind of big these days.  Not big enough to be Zach Randolph.

You never know though I guess.  He looked pretty good in college.

Vonleh ... who knows.  Early returns aren't great.  I guess Chris Bosh was a slow starter, though.

Just because someone was picked 6th over 7th doesn't mean he was the best available. This was a massive mistake for a mid level organization that can't afford to make them. The Lakers are on another planet than the Celtics. Banks 2.0 will be playing in China in a few years while Randle will be working on another all star appearance.

Care to put a few shekels on that?

Vonleh will have his chance in Portland. If he develops they couldn't ask for a better Aldridge replacement but like you said, he hasn't showed much yet. Fighting for minutes with Cody Zeller probably wasn't the ideal environment to grow though.

I'd still take Smart, I do like Julius Randle's game aesthetically but Smart fits our culture better. The Lakers will probably have to mold their roster around Randle's athletic limitations more than we do for Smart's.

Smart all day.  Randle will get pushed around and Vonleh will be a career journeyman

Puzzling to me that anyone could say they would rather have 2 guys that haven't played. ::)

You do realize Randle was out so we have no idea what he can do and Vonleh couldn't get off the bench, did Young get more PT than he did?

Considering one broke his leg and one already has been traded....hell no.

No, because as much as we NOW know in hindsight that we have a bunch of guards, there is no way we could have known that back then.

Smart was the best player available at #6, and a key reason we made the playoffs, so I stick to those guns.

However I'd still love to get Vonleh somehow - kid has ridiculous upside.

Let's see how Randle does.

I had Smart 8th on my board, but as the draft approached it sounded like Vonleh had some major red flags.    I had Randle ahead of Smart.

Same here. I won't lie, I wanted Randle a lot more on draft day. I didn't see Smart as a ball handling PG which is what we needed even with Rondo still on the roster.

It's unfortunate that Randle broke his leg last year but things like that can happen to anyone. I think Randle has 16-10 potential.
