Don't worry they have a star in Marcus Banks 2.0!  ;D

Yes if you mean that he will be a star in China then I agree. He's out of the league before the age of 30.

Your posts are really intense. Did Smart do something personally to you or a family member of yours? Were you the fan he got into it with that one game in college?

Seeing these threads about Monroe and Harris at first is a positive. It shows that the Green Teamers have set more realistic expectations which I'm happy about. It shows the message is getting through to them that no top level free agent would ever want to play in Boston. Good. Now here is the downside of this. Harris and Monroe make this team good enough to be the 8th seed. A yearly 8th seed is the treadmill. If you are not going to do anything with those assets such as trade them then Harris and Monroe helps take out the dusty old treadmill from two years ago. I mean I guess according to NBA rules you need to spend the money somehow. I just don't see the logic. I would rather just barely hit the salary floor and tank harder next year.

You need to trade the pieces for more draft picks if needed. If they sign Monroe I would trade him ASAP. Same with Harris. Trade them for picks and get assets.

1. you always add good young talent if you can
2. they would probably be the best players on our team
3. once you get good players, you can get better ones in free agency or via trade
4. more picks serious? ::) guess you missed the draft when nobody wanted our picks and now we have to many to begin with
5. you have noticed every time the C's tank they get screwed in the lottery right?

If we can get them without giving up any picks, then there is an okay chance of us getting a couple lottery picks to add into the mix.  We will need that to realistically be able to move for a superstar.  For instance, if we wanted to trade for Cousins or another big name player right now, who could we offer in a trade package?  Sully?  That's a joke.  We need players like this so we can ship them out the door for someone good.  Plus, if we did have them and one of those BK picks turned into Ben Simmons or something, we actually might be good enough to compete for a championship.  I would be totally on board for something like this.

You can't trade a free agent for 3 months after you sign him per the collective bargaining agreement.

A bigger problem is pitching a major free agent on the idea of coming to your team and then turning around and trading him. That's going to put you in hot water with agents and players. Monroe's getting the max wherever he goes. So the highest priority is going where he feels the fit is best.

Of course we could tell him that we're planning to turn around and trade him ASAP. Then no one could claim to have been deceived.

I like getting Monroe.  Get talented bigs (especially Cs) whenever you can.

Not as sold on Harris, but I could probably deal with it as a package deal along with Monroe.

The key for the Celtics not being on the "treadmill" is they still have so many draft picks and young players that are trade bait or (draft picks) lotto potential (the Nets are on the down path and so could Dallas)

There are to many ways for the Celtics to add talent, and then consolidate talent through trades.  They need the player others will look at and say "I could play with them"

I put this on the other board but I figured it fit this topic.  I was wondering if you really think this team would be a "treadmill team" if you actually look at what could be done.

Trades

Cleveland
B. Haywood
Draft rights to PF R. Christmas
2016 or 2017 2nd rounder

to

Celtics
E. Turner
Draft rights to SG/PG M. Thornton
Bostons 2016 1st

Why do we do this?  B. Haywood is no guaranteed, takes a good amount of money off the books 10.5 million  Get back a young power forward/center in Christmas.  Cleveland does this because they get the 1st round pick next year they want.  A probably cheaper version of J.R. Smith who they've talked about wanting to keep, but could now let go.  M. Thornton gives them a young guard who can play the point or shooting guard, just as well as Turner can do the same.

Second trade involves 76ers

76ers
Nerlens Noel

to

Celtics - This could be change with pieces if they rather an Avery Bradley.  But this is ideal what I think works out really for best for us and them.
Kelly Olynyk
Draft rights to Terry Rozier
Chris Babb
2016 Dallas 1st
One or two of the 2016 2nd round picks we have

Why do we do this?  Well it's easy to see, Nerlens Noel gives us our young rim protector, gives up a few picks that we won't be able to use, save us money.  The bigger question most reading is why would 76ers do this, breaking it down piece by piece.  Kelly Olynyk gives them a big to replace Noel but can play beside Okafor I believe better, he doesn't play under the hoop, he's more of a big stretch 4.  Plus fill there role and would be a nice back up for either Okafor or Embiid.  Terry Rozier, a good player but I don't think fits well in Boston with Smart and IT and Bradley.  (Also I rather keep Smart, Bradley, IT over this rookie.  But I do really like Roziers game and is worth a 1st round pick.)  It gives 76ers a starter young point guard that can grow with the team and Okafor.  Chris Babb is a good throw in piece to give them a cheap player who has shown flashes of ball skills.  Then obviously a 1st rounder and 1 or 2 2nd rounder gives them more picks.

Resign Free Agent

Jae Crowder the only resign we do.

Two Max Deals (Believe this can happen because of the Haywood deal after letting him go.  Plus with the other trades giving more cap rooms.  If can get them each for a little under the max, it'll work out the best for us.)

Small Forward - Tobias Harris
Power Forward - Greg Monroe

One more free agent.
Bring home Paul Pierce. (Could be a pipe dream but I think with this team together in the east he'd think about this.

Celtics After these trades and free agents.

Point Guards - Marcus Smart, Isaiah Thomas
Shooting Guard - Avery Bradley, James Young, R.J. Hunter
Small Forward - Tobias Harris, Paul Pierce, Jae Crowder, Gerald Wallace
Power Forward - Greg Monroe, Jared Sullinger, Jordan Mickey, Rakeem Christmas
Center - Nerlens Noel, Tyler Zeller

Mind you our power forwards can play center when needed.  Same as our small forwards can play some shooting guards like a Piece or Crowder.  While Bradley could play some point and Smart could play some shooting guard.

We'd have 15 players under contract as this sits, able to dress 13 with the new rules.  So we'd be able to put Christmas, Hunter, Young, Mickey, any of them down in the d-league to keep improving.  Also with keeping Wallace you're able to either stretch him if needed for cap room to make this happen, or you're able to trade him at the deadline.  I believe this team could definitely contend in the East and maybe bring us deep into the playoffs, plus keeps us young and still having draft picks.

This is best case scenario, before people jump saying this is stupid.

Adding Monroe and harris to this roster would give the Cs three players ( IT being the third) capable of scoring 20ppg any given night. This simple fact coupled with solid team principles on offense and defense can go a long way. I think these signing would put the Cs in te 2nd tier off the east along with Toronto and Washington and behind the cabs and bulls.

If the push for contention starts in earnest this summer, I'd be more inclined to hope that Danny makes the first big move in the form of a trade.  Send out salary and preserve cap space.  Not sure who or how -- or that he'd be maximizing his team's value -- but I'd try for a 2nd tier young potential star like Monroe/Harris via trade.

Overall, I think maximizing value comes in one more year (or at least till next trade deadline) as I think many of the C's young players will improve (some won't, be I think it's a good gamble that many will).  Also, Brooklyn's picks hopefully become more valuable as teams see the disaster the Nets franchise is becoming (also a gamble, but I think a good one).  I'd hate to lose cap space on Greg Monroe if a chance to lure a superstar is on the horizon in the summer of 2016.

Adding Monroe is more likely to help then hurt in the hunt for a star FA. If he flourishes in his new role then he could be a player who attracts a star.

I think drafting where we did is part of the treadmill too.  We got burnt by the playoffs although I rooted for us to win our series as much as the next guy.

Getting either of Harris or Monroe does a tremendous amount for our team.  It makes our team a better destination for higher quality players and could help improve the way teams view our younger players as they contribute to winning franchise.  I also don't doubt that this makes us an easy 4 or 5 seed in the East...
