Celtics want to maintain flexibility and acquire tradeable assets. If we overpay a young guy like Tobias Harris to a long term contract then his contract becomes almost untrade-able or not much value and even though he's young still I doubt he is the option for us to one day win a championship. If we can sign a player to a 2 or 3 year deal at a reasonable number then we will probably do it but I just don't buy that we will go after someone like Tobias Harris for near max for a 4 or 5 year deal. Tobias Harris reminds me of a poor man's Carmelo Anthony but we have to remember that Orlando is not even trying that hard to retain him and the numbers he put up were on terrible terrible Magic teams. I do not buy that he is the answer for us.

I think we as Celtics fans need to be more patient and just because we have cap space it doesn't mean we have to or should use it. We have to be very very patient and if there is ever a James Harden situation or a Kevin love trade situation we have to be ready to pounce which we are absolutely in the position to do so. Whether or not those kind of opportunities actually come up is a risk we have to take but locking us into long term contracts with non franchise players is an absolute mistake. Having many smaller contracts/expiring and solid prospects with 1st round picks have always been the key pieces to acquiring stars if they're ever available and that's exactly what we have.

There is no marquee free agent on the market that would put us over the top so I believe that we will not make any big moves in this off season.

See: Kevin Love, DeMarcus Cousins, LaMarcus Aldridge who are superstar/all-star free agents or players that aren't coming to Boston. Even Dwight Howard and Chris Paul didn't want to play for the Doc Rivers Celtics. Therefore, good to say many of these stars won't be coming here.

Would be sweet to develop role players into stars. Gotta settle for above-average talents!

You gotta at least try to get them and the reason why cp3 and Dwight didn't want to come because the celtics core was aging

I think unless we can score a true superstar we should be gambling on short term smaller contract players like Greg Oden.

Yeah, I think they'll come up empty in free agency as well. Usually you have to make your first move in the draft or a trade to get that first star first. To give other stars a reason to join your team. To convince them they can win if they come here.

Boston hasn't made that first move yet. So yeah, I think they're stuck behind the 8 ball trying to make something out of nothing. Tough place to be. Small chance they can get something going but I am not optimistic about it.

To make matters worse, the rising cap has made it impossible for Boston to overpay any of these unproven rising stars. Their max contracts are good deals under new rising cap and several teams will be lining up to get them. So teams in Boston's positions whose usual best route to getting a FA in a difficult circumstance -- offering them far more money ($10-15 million more over life of contract) is impossible here.

That was David West. CP3 and DH didn't want to come because it was cold, lack of media exposure, and lack of nightlife. Again, these issues need to be sorted out with players earlier when they are drafted. Let them know Boston is a great city. The only way to get players early enough to appreciate a mid market team like the Celtics is to tank for talent. Free agency will never be more than a losing proposition for the Celtics. They will strike out on any big time free agent I'll bet my posting rights on it. The best they can get is Monroe or maybe Harris. Neither of which help the goal to tank all that much.

You have to get two stars/ significant free agents to convince one. Teams can put off their rebuilds but players have a limited shelf life (as do coaches, ask Doc Rivers) and want to be in competitive teams as often as possible. Ergo the players the Celtics want won't come if they don't think the C's are going to be more competitive.

In place there is a great coach and excellent young core. I think the 'stars' will come if they know another 'star' is on their way. Though I doubt we get LBJ and Love.

I don't think the draft is a set back that can't be overcome by the start of next season. I am not sure that DA doesn't have something up his sleeve. I am getting the feeling though that the OP could be right. If you can't get the free agents to be contenders, build the war chest, develop the team and aim for the following season.

Let's face it--we'll most probably never get a great FA to come here!  This year will be the big test, however, and we have lots of cap room, a great coach, and a competitive team.  The only thing missing is the glitz and glamor and in many cases, the weather!  Stars can take their pick of where to get the money, so those other things are the most important---and Boston just doesn't have those OTHER things!

Greg Oden is done by all accounts. Maybe if you said Javale Macgee or even Hasheem Thabeet lol.

The only reason a free agent won't come here is because we have NO STARS OR EVEN ALL STARS. We should just suck it up and trade away our better veteran players(IT ET AB) for assets and or prospects and then end up in the top 5 for the draft...maybe even get lucky and get higher.

I hope we do not over pay for Crowder, too.  I think he has a finite ceiling, sure he plays hard and makes a good effort on D, but he is hardly a cornerstone to build around.

Lack of media exposure? Seriously?

It seems to me we have a good shot at signing free agents. Monroe and Harris are good players we should offer them both the max and get going. Why mess around, these are the type last year that got max and if we want a talent upgrade this is what you do. Honestly I have no idea why people are saying those are "second tier" FAs? That would be a great score for us!!!

If the Celtics strike out on free agency, I say Danny sniffs out some 'bad contracts' that teams are interested in moving , David Lee , Faried in Denver , Pekovic possibly in Minnesota. See what assets they are willing to attach to them for the Celtics to take them off their hands.
Get a few more future firsts, The time frame for a championship launch is a couple of years away anyway.
So when the opportunity arises for Ainge to go all in, he can stuff as many of those first down the throat of those greedy GMs as it takes, Four not enough , here take another  ;D
