  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
This, from 6/12:

@ryenarussillo

Few trade notes. The scouts put WC Stein in special tier as a defensive player. Heard Cousins wants him @6 so he doesn't have to play C.

Thank you Roy for even acknowledging this aspect. This, I believe, is the #1 reason the Kings selected WCS. Remember, Karl is the one who reportedly wanted to trade Cousins, not Vlade or the owner.

Here?s the problem with replacing your front office right before the draft. Vlade & Karl had never seen Mudiay play. Mudiay > WCS

Here's my guess...  Cousins for Russell + Randle.

PG - Russell, SG - McLemore, SF - Stauskas, PF - Randle, C - WCS

Nice young core

Really?  Core?  Or just two studs one at Center and one at PG.

Uhh... Yes? Three players is a core.

You pretty much just described the Clippers.

Why would DMC want WCS on their team?

First, DMC repeatedly got frustrated with the Kings defense last year.  It was both a lack of talent and a lack of effort.  WCS will help with both.

Second, DMC's minutes were limited a bit due to foul trouble.  That's because he was always defending the best interior player on the opposing team.  With WCS, he can switch some of those defensive assignments, which will theoretically keep Boogie on the floor more.

I don't love the pick because of the players left on the board (Mudiay and Winslow).  I also think that DMC + WCS creates spacing issues, or at least prolongs them (since the Kings didn't have a competent PF beforehand.)  However, I can see why Boogie likes this pick.

...and third, WCS requires far fewer looks that anyone else they could have drafted at #6. It's a win-win for Cousins. Get someone to carry the load for him on defense who also does not need to see the ball virtually ever.

I honestly think the Lakers are very high on Russell. If they wanted to go after Cousins, I think they would've drafted Okafor to replace DMC.
That assumes they took Russell for themselves.   I think they took Russell for Sacramento... I think the Kings are stupid, but I think the Kings decided they were better off getting PG - Russell + PF - Randle + C - WCS ....  over C - Okafor, PF - Randle + Guard at #6?   ... First of all, Okafor and Randle are a bad fit together.   WCS and Randle compliment each other, because one is offense and the other is defense.  Second, the Kings may have expected Mudiay to be off the board by #6... or like Chad Ford said, they hadn't even seen Mudiay play so he wasn't someone they liked.

It's a "conspiracy theory" a bit, I guess... but I'm leaning towards the idea that the Lakers took Russell for the Kings.    It very much seems like Russell + Randle for Cousins is a logical trade that would make sense for both teams.   Drafting WCS at #6 (maybe 5-10 picks too high, btw) gives them their replacement for Cousins.  This is definitely not to suggest that WCS is comparable to Cousins at all... he definitely isn't... but he plays that position and is a good defensive role player.   Russell gives them a dynamic guard that would fit very well with what George Karl would want to do.  WCS + Randle are a good compliment for each other... whereas Randle + Okafor would be all offense and no defense.

2 players that never play a single nba game for DMC ?
That would be one of the dumbest trade in history.
You act like you've never seen a player traded for draft picks...

Was Andrew Wiggins for Kevin Love "the dumbest trade in history"?   I think 'Sota got an unprecedented haul for their impending free agent star.

If they need to trade Cousins... nobody is beating an offer of D'Angelo Russell + Julius Randle.  And since Willie Cauley Stein is already in Sacramento, they don't necessarily need to get a center back by trading away Cousins.

PG - Russell
SG - McLemore
SF - Stauskas
PF - Randle
C - WCS

Not a bad core...  Rudy Gay is there too, but they will probably look to move him and build around the youth if they were successful in acquiring Randle + Russell

Did Staukas grow more? He has a short wing span and weighs less than Young.

Dangelo Russell could be a franchise player, a healthier, better Brandon Roy in a way. He also doesn't carry the baggage Cousins does, and doesn't get paid nearly as much. I don't see the Lakers trading him for Cousins. They know Kobe is just about done, it wouldn't make sense for them to give up the foundation of their future in Randle, Russell, and Clarkson to make Kobe happy for a year or two.

If we have the opportunity to pick up a Kings unprotected 1st in a trade I hope Ainge does it in a heartbeat. I don't see how this combustible team does anything but crash and burn at some point in the next 2 years.

Take a look at WCS pre draft shooting videos.. His shot is wet

Being the Kings.

Which equals they don't know what they're doing as the kings lolol.

But one thing's for sure- Cousins won't be traded this offseason.

One possible reason is to wait until Russell is signed so his salary can be used for matching like the Cavs did with Wiggins last year.  Personally I think Sacramento is waffling on trading Cousins.

I agree with you that two all-star types is enough to form a core.  In my post I was criticizing his inclusion of Stauskas as part of that Core.  If Stauskas were a Celtic he'd be a scrub according to LarBrd33.

I don't think his trade with the Lakers will happen. I think the Lakers don't want to give up Russell and I think the Kings would want more for Cousins.
And regardless of Russell and Randle being a decent haul for a disgruntled player, the Kings should know if they trade Cousins to L.A. the Lakers will add Love or Aldridge plus Rondo and Tobias Harris and Sac will never beat the Lakers again...ever.
