None of this is happening. All of these rumors are nonsense. But if this happens, this is how it would look.
Step 1 - The ridiculous Anthony Bennett dealPer a league source, Minnesota Timberwolves have discussed trading Anthony Bennett, Nos. 31 and 38 to the Boston Celtics for pick No. 28.
If that's real, you have to do it. There's no way the #28 pick has more potential than Anthony Bennett at this point. There's no difference between 28 and 31. You are getting #38 and Bennett for free. Bennett makes 6 mil, tho... that's a prob.
Step 2 - Cousins... Boston Celtics offering Marcus Smart/Jared Sullinger/Gerald Wallace/#16/#28/multiple future 1st round picks for DeMarcus Cousins.
Wallace - 10.1 mil, Sully - 2.3 mil, Smart - 3.4 mil only... that's 15.8 mil. Let's combine this with the above rumor and also give them Bennett (6 mil) as a sweetner... (someone get me on the phone with Vivek Ranadive, I can sell him on Bennett) ... that's 21.8 mil. Cousins only makes 14.7 mil. How about we also take Stauskas off their hands (2.8 mil) ... that only pushes it to 17.5 mil, but it works:
http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=q25uxt2 ... However, if necessary we can take one of Sacramento's bad contracts off their hands like Carl Landry to sweeten it even more for them:
http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=p3z6ulnLet's look at the ol cap situation after the dust settles.
Cousins 14.7 mil
Stauskas 2.8 mil
Landry - 6.7 mil
Thomas - 6.9 mil
Bradley - 7.7 mil
Turner - 3.4 mil
Olynyk - 2.1 mil
Zeller - 2.6 mil
Young - 1.7 mil
Crowder - 1 mil?
Total = 49.6 mil
That leaves us with only about 17 mil in cap space.
Step 3 - Kevin Love via sign-and-trade:Kevin Love wants a 5 year 100 million dollar contract, right? That puts us just on the edge of not even being able to sign him outright (at least 20 mil per year). A sign-and-trade might be beneficial. Here is how one blog described a potential sign and trade:
Avery Bradley, Evan Turner?s expiring contract, James Young and a 2016 1st round pick (Boston has a a few)
Instead of arguing about it, let's just go with it. This removes Bradley (7.7 mil), Turner (3.4 mil) and Young (1.7 mil) off the books. We can use cap space to absorb the rest of Love's contract. Here's how the new salary situation would look:
Cousins 14.7 mil
Love - 20 mil
Stauskas 2.8 mil
Landry - 6.7 mil
Thomas - 6.9 mil
Olynyk - 2.1 mil
Zeller - 2.6 mil
Crowder - 1 mil?
Total = 56.8 mil
That leaves us another 10 mil to play with to bring back Paul Pierce and trot out a respectable lineup of:
PG - IT
SG - Stauskas (lol... I like his shooting. Don't hate)
SF - Pierce
PF - Love
C - Cousins
It's not ideal.
Step #3 Do-Over:Let's rework the ridiculous scenario a bit. Let's pretend like we don't need to take on Landry's money. Let's pretend like we don't go after Kevin Love. Instead, let's focus on the ridiculous idea that we'd sign LaMarcus Aldridge and Wesley Matthews as a package deal. Here's how that looks... We still give up Bradley, Turner and Young in a sign-and-trade for one of those guys.
Here's what we're looking at:
Cousins 14.7 mil
Stauskas 2.8 mil
Thomas - 6.9 mil
Olynyk - 2.1 mil
Zeller - 2.6 mil
Crowder - 1 mil?
30 mil on the books.
Give Wesley Matthews his absurd 15 mil and Aldridge his 20 mil - 65 mil. Just under the cap.
New Lineup:
PG - IT
SG - Stauskas (LOOOOLLL)
SF - Matthews
PF - Aldridge
C - Cousins
Maybe we can still lure Pierce with the minimum or something. And also, in both of these scenarios I kept Olynyk and Crowder, so my idea of starting Stauskas at SG probably isn't necessary.
It's fun to dream.
