Ainge reportedly offered Smart, 16, and 28 for Noel and 3. Philly quickly turned them down and "weren't interested", but would you guys do it? Is it at all fair?

Heck yea. Fair for them? Nope!

It's a 3-deep draft in many peoples' eyes. I'd scoop up Russell in a heartbeat. I'm not a Porzy guy, but I'm sure many can make a good argument for that, too. And Noel would be awfully nice.

We would get Russell and Noel. They get Smart and Dekker. Fair trade.

See, the thing is failed trades do not often leak out into the media like that. Feel like this trade was fabricated by a reporter, why would a LA reporter report a BOS PHI thing?

For sure, I never said it was 100% true. I just said it was reported. But then he said no way Boston made this offer, when I think it would make sense to offer a shot in the dark like this, even if you don't think Hinkie would say yes.

I love Smart, but I'd have to do this.

Elite defensive bigs like Noel don't grow on trees and are very valuable in this league, so throw in #3 as well - yeah, I can't say no to that.

I also don't get why people believe Boston wouldn't make this offer.  Ainge and Stevens have already been on record stating that one of their key priorities is to get a rim protecting big man, and it's a well known fact that Ainge wants to try to trade up in to the draft lottery.

Plus we already have a good PG (Thomas) and are depsperate for a center, while Philly already has a good center (Embiid) and are desperate for a PG.  So in theory the player swap makes complete sense to both teams.

However I feel like those two players are of roughly equivalent value right now, so trying to also get #3 out of them (in return for #16 + #28) is simply not going to happen, and would almost certainly be the reason for Philly hanging up the phone.

If Ainge offered the player swap straight up, I think there's a good chance Philly says yes.

I agree. I don't think is an indication that Ainge isn't sold on Smart or that he's shopping him, I liken this to calling Golden State and offering the entire arsenal of picks for Stephen Curry.  You see what the other guy says.  Apparently it was no.

Agreed - I wouldn't say Ainge isn't sold on Smart, or that he's shopping him necessarily. I think Ainge really loves Smart.

But Ainge is a professional through and through, and isn't the type to let emotional attachment impact his ability to make decisions.  If he has an opportunity to make a move that he thinks would benefit the team (either by upgrading outright talent, or by filling a more dire need) then he'll do it.

I respect that about Ainge to a degree - he's always looking to better the team, no matter what it takes, and the Pierce/KG trade was evidence of that, and that decision is what has put the Celtics in the excellent position they are in now.  If he kept Pierce and KG, then Boston would basically be in the position that the Nets are in right now...just not quite as bad.

This is a mistake in my opinion.  Smart should be off limit.

the trade is alright in my eyes, my issue lies with the person that reported this "failed trade" and who might have leaked it. those things should stay between GM's
