Boston Celtics

Trade

#1 Draft Pick in 1980 Draft
#13 Draft Pick in 1980 Draft

for

Robert Parish
#3 Draft Pick in 1980 Draft

Seems favorable to the Celtics. However...

Joe Barry Carroll would have been a great center as well.  Perhaps McHale doesn't get picked #3 by Warriors and slips a little and changes the draft to the point where Kiki Vandeweghe becomes available at #13 for the Celtics. Kiki never wanted to play for Dallas, Red would have played this up.

With Joe Barry and Kiki as front-court teammates of Bird, do the Celtics not only win championships in 81,84 and 86. But do we win in 85 and 87 as well with this scenario?

Kurt Rambis gets clotheslined by McHale in 1984 but Rambis still plays. TRUTH Kiki clotheslines Rambis.  Rambis would never play again. Kiki's forearms were notorious for being the strongest in the league. This would have set the tone for championships in 85,86 and 87.

Also Kiki's father and sister were both physicians and I believe the father specialized in back pain. Kiki would have hooked Bird up at the first signs of back pain and perhaps extend Bird's career.

When this is done, the deal does not look like that steal it was for Celtics, does it?

tp for a truly insightful thread that has changed how i see celtic history. what a disaster this trade was!! i had been deluding myself that the celtics might have won this, but now...well, it is crystal clear that GS took the celtics to the cleaners on this one.  :o

just one more sad moment in celtic history.  ;)

but using chief's underlying hypothesis on alternative universes, we can see that in reality the lack of a chief thread would create a better-than-chief-thread.  ;D

I don't know what I would do with myself if Parish had never played for the Celtics.
At least a goldfish with a Lincoln Log on its back goin' across your floor to your sock drawer has a miraculous connotation to it.

TP!

I didn't know Kiki's father and sister were both physicians. I even failed to note about Kiki's forearms. The question has to asked, if Kiki had taken after his sister and father, would he have been the tallest physician, with the strongest forearms in the Country?

You're right the deal doesn't look like a steal. I did note that deal and steal do in fact rhyme.

(sorry in a silly mood)

I think Kiki's sister had a decent jump shot too.

Trade even worse than I thought.

I'm dizzy from the paradox. I can only assume ForearmKiki on a Nuggets forum somewhere messed with our timeline already to create the Big 3 in the first place.

Wow, very odd...I was just posting on the Nuggets Blog. I think my last post was something about Alex English and Dan Issel. Weird, I hated those guys, it couldn't have been anything good

Anyway, just wanted to say hi to all the Celtics fans out there. Joe Barry, myself and  David Thirdkill will all be at Copley Place signing autographs and talking about all the great stories of our six championships. Sorry Bird couldn't make it.

If this trade never happened, the Celtics never would have had/kept Danny Ainge, and Danny Ainge would not have been close with Kevin McHale, which means the trade for KG probably doesn't happen.

Maybe the real question is: Who really won the KG trade of 2008?
