There are no Dave Cowens types. He was a one-off, broke-the-mold players. Dave Cowens is easily one of the most iconic players in the history of the NBA. I can't think of another player as intense and physically reckless. Not Russell, who would ease off when the game was in hand (that's how Wilt, the ultimate stats hound, racked up a lot of meaningless points when they battled) and not KG (who was not physically reckless like Cowens was).
Voted top 50 in the first 50 years of the NBA in 1996 by a 50 member panel of which 13 were top BB media (Bob Ryan was one) and 37 players (mostly top HOFers like Hondo, Bird, Magic, Cousy, Barry, Baylor, Sir Charles, Jabbar, Wilt, Russell, MJ, Erving, etc) and long-time NBA execs (Red, Holzman, Chuck Daly, Al Attles, etc).
18 PPG, 14 RPG, NBA all-defense several times and 2nd best career defensive rating, NBA MVP, AND led the NBA in fouls twice. A maniac on the floor. Simmons had him 31st in his Book of BB and said he's one of the players from the 60s and 70s who could have been just as effective today.
