I know we worked out a beneficial trade with Rondo, but it will kind-of bug me if he goes there now after [apparently] squawking about not wanting to play for the Kings. Our package could have been so much better.
Still, he needs to find a place that he can resurrect his career and I will be happy for him if he can do that (as long as it's not with the Lakers).
What was the proposed trade for Rondo with the Kings? I seem not to recall.
This was one of them

It started at two picks, but then was updated to one (but likely what would have been the #8 last year). Looking back, it seems pretty laughable.
Hey, at least we got IT!
At one time I remember it was going to be Mcelmore and the 2015 pick, which would have given us numbers 6 and 8 in last year's draft and Mcelmore. I'd also be a little ticked if we missed that package and Rondo goes there anyways. I know things have changed, but still.
Larbrd must be really ticked - he's been riding the McLemore train since well before he drastically improved this year. Throw in #8 (hopefully we wouldn't have taken Stauskas) and IT and those are three really good assets.
Yeah... I am.
But it's kinda like when I wanted us to trade Rondo for Steph Curry well before he broke out (he was dealing with ankle injuries and averaged 15ppg behind Monta Ballhog) or the time I wanted us to trade Rondo for a draft pick that would have landed us Nerlens Noel (Jrue Holiday was traded for Noel + the pick that became Elfrid Payton) ...
In all of those instances they seemed like great ideas to me and we had some public buzz about how they were semi-plausible, but in reality we probably never had a shot to pull them off either because all of us (myself included) were dramatically overrating Rondo's trade value... or because Rondo's free agency limited his destination possibilities.
In the instance with the Kings, it was reported that Rondo was unwilling to go to Sacramento. I'd argue with fans like BBallTim at the time who were convinced Ainge wasn't trying to trade Rondo, but the news that Rondo was refusing to go to Sacramento was pretty telling to me. How exactly does that information get out there unless Rondo to the Kings was actually being discussed? Was the assumption that Rondo saw some fake rumors online, informed his agent, and his agent told teh Celtics, 'Hey just in case you're considering actually trading Rondo, he wants to make it known he's not going to Sacramento"? ... Doubtful. It was more likely that Boston and Sacramento had some real discussions, the team had to reach out to Rondo to see if he was willing to sign an extension there, and Rondo killed it. Either way, Rondo's refusal to go to the Kings probably made that deal a pipe dream. And the idea that he's been so brutally exposed on Dallas that he'd now consider going to Sacramento is kinda funny.
