Sullinger: 'Right now, everyone is doubting me'

 Chris Forsberg, ESPN Staff Writer

"I think it’s just, they want me to go one step further," said Sullinger. "I think that’s what it is -- one step further. That's pretty much what I’m doing [this offseason], everyday at Ohio State. I'm trying to push myself to be that guy, but also who I want to be. I’m slowly working on it and still pushing myself."

Sullinger remained evasive on exactly what changes he's made, but suggested it's been a sizable lifestyle overhaul, all with the hope of "being the guy that I know I can be."

Added Sullinger: "Everyone has questioned me before -- said I'm not the most athletic, not this guy, not that guy -- and every level I’ve proved them wrong. It's another chance for me to show my work."
Sullinger, who is set to earn a modest $2.3 million next season, is extension eligible this summer. Both the Celtics and Sullinger's camp have hinted that contract talks are more likely to occur next summer when Sullinger would be headed toward restricted free agency.

Sullinger has downplayed contract chatter and did so again while noting, "I’m not really focused on numbers. I think my production will speak for itself." He stressed that he's more focused on what he needs to accomplish off the court this offseason.
And he hears the whispers of those that don't believe he can be that player.

"Right now, everyone is doubting me," said Sullinger. "I get everything, 'He’s not this, he’s not that. He’s not the guy that we thought he was going to be, potentially.' I’ve heard it all. I use it as motivation. Nothing is going to change [with his approach], I’m going to keep working, working as hard as possible."

I'm nervous about Sully man. Hard to trust him with big Dollars.

I think the salary cap is expected to make a large jump next summer - so no, I do not see a situation where Sully is worth the max under the higher cap.

Main concerns about Sully even if he does put up 17/10 are:

(1) How good his conditioning and physical shape is (throughout the year)
(2) How good his defense is -- it was lousy this past season. That cannot continue.
(3) How efficient his scoring is -- only 50% TS% past two seasons.

How well he does in those areas are main factors in determining whether he'll earn (a) starter-money (b) quasi-star money (c) genuine star money.

I'd give Sully $12-15m annually if his numbers continue to improve next season and he looks like a better defensive player. Both are well within the realm of possibility.

I think the max for Sully would be higher than $15m though.

Draft: 8 first rounders in next 5 years.

Cap space: $24 mil.

Sully hasn't shown anything that remotely indicates he could be worth a max contract. I hope that changes next season though.

  • Celtic's only raise championship Banners
He needs to lower his body fat percentage and increase his conditioning.

He said himself he gets winded way too quickly and I believe it affects his shots. He was way more fit and athletic when he came into the league. Look at his hs videos, he's dunking on everyone.

The real question is will he even get the minutes to put up those numbers?
Fool me once(Mark Blount) shame on you , fool me twice shame on me.
I wouldn't go anywhere above 8-10 per season with it heavy in incentives along with a weight clause.Got to keep him hungry to stay in shape so to speak.

I don't think Sully is worth a max deal, but he's worth a mid-level contract.  The Celtics would be wise to sign him to an extension now, rather then wait the year.  He'd be a good trade piece with a mid-level salary or great value for us to keep.

LOL. Absolutely not. Even if he shows up in shape and plays great, he's still nothing resembling a max player.

He would have to have a realllly great season. It isn't likely at all. The best case scenario I can envision for him is showing up in shape, posting 15/10 in 32mpg, and earning ~$12m/yr. Even so I would seriously worry about his weight, and I'd really want to see a diet clause (he loses money if he weighs in over say 270).

Were he to become a new player, post 22/12 in 36mpg, then sure pay him the max-- hopefully still with a diet clause. But that just isn't a realistic scenario for Sully anymore.

I love the cheeseburger option, lol ;D, so TP.

That aside, I think what motivates him right now is his next contract, quite honestly, and even though he's very talented, I think we need to stay away from guys with weight issues, so if he plays out of his mind and Charlotte is dumb enough to do this, haha ;D, I'd trade him for Vonleh in a heartbeat, even if it's at the trade deadline.

Of course, with our luck, Sullinger will leave, never have weight problems again, and become a better rebounding David West-type all star. *facepalm* Ugh.
